this seems like another messy, disgusting upgrade from MS

I have to agree, the "free" upgrade bricked one of my desktop systems into the infinite restart loop from he!! and none of the recovery options have resolved the problem. And, it keeps coming back like a zombie in a cheap horror flick. I've uninstalled the update, opted out, etc. etc. and it just keeps trying. I'm going to have to do a full reinstall of Win 8.1 to get rid of it I'm sure.

But that is not like the "fast or slow" updates in the Preview versions.

I found this:
Press Windows key + Pause/Break from the Desktop.
  • Click on the Advanced system settings from the left pane.
  • Click on Hardware tab and click on Device Installation Settings.
  • Check mark on the No, Let me choose what to do option.
  • Check mark on the Never install driver software from Windows update option.
  • Check on Save Changes.
I used it and re-installed and had no trouble. I don't know if it helped or if things just worked right this time.... nor do I know if it is a good idea to leave the settings like this. I think there is something to be said for, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"... but what do I know? Not much, I'm not Gary but..."I do love to turn knobs... I think it is a way I can create!

Let me know if you think I should change this option back, I'm sure most people here know a LOT more about computers and OS than I do. Thanks for the help!

That looks like it. There should be documentation included. Normally the folder gets extracted then you point to the driver in device manager/update drivers using browse..

http://answers.microsoft....4d66-9a5b-291300006293

I tried using the Browse function, but Windows stated: "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date".

You hit the wrong button. Try a different one.. Would give you the exact combination nowhere near windows right now...

You are right, I had to dig a bit deeper (Browse/Have Disk etc...) to install the latest driver. Sadly, it also only works temporarily....(drops out anywhere after 15 - 45 minutes). I'm getting a new NIC card this week. (Sorry Jbow for hijacking your thread).

Have you installed your new NIC yet? What did you get and how is it working?

I ended up getting a Plugable USB3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter: http://plugable.com/products/usb3-e1000 and I have to say it work very well....just had to plug it in (Microsoft signed drivers included).

As a matter of fact, before I received my adapter, the owner of the company sent me a welcome email with a link to download drivers (of course the unit I have didn't need any drivers installed as they were already included in Windows 10.....Nice!!!). Even their support was excellent in trying to help me sort out my issue, although I found the actual solution in the Windows Ten forums. Very good company theses Plugable people are........good reviews on Amazon as well.

Generally it's best to buy a PCI card for the desktop so it does not flood the USB bus where your audio interface may be plugged in (FireWire users and PCI audio card users don't have to worry).

Of course with a laptop no choice. Word of warning then, if you use a USB adapter you may need to disable it whilst recording.

The W-10 update from 10/29/15 installed with no problems... all is well. I thought it a bit weird that when I researched it, apparently one of the updates is to help upgrading to W-10 easier...?? It is a W-10 update, makes no sense. IDK, maybe I "misread" it. LOL.. anyway, it didn't seem to cause any problems.

MY update from 565 fails due to not being able to access the system reserved drive. I haven't looked into it yet as 565 runs fine.
