what is the path of the echo bottom and can the path be set to an alternative destinations?

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you talking about "Input echo" button which allows you to hear the input signal with the FX (= what the whole track will sound after the recording)? If so, where would you like to route it?
You can add buses and sends to the tracks to route the signal and you can change the output destination, but routing Input echo...?? 
 

on the track when I am trying to record and I can here myself when the echo button is on. I would like it to go into a buss. thanks for the welcome.

midi or audio track? you should go to i/o section and route track output to "new stereo bus" Sonar will automatically create the bus for you. then your track will be routed to that bus. if midi you "may" have to route to an audio track then to a bus
