Look at new DAW potentially they seem reasonably priced and my usual supplier does not seem to do the CPU I would prefer.

Thanks

Bought lots of components off them over the years, but never a complete PC because I've been building my own for about 20 years. It's only recently that commercial PC builders have begun to understand the peculiar needs of DAWs.

My experience has always been positive, including the time a few years ago someone put three RAM sticks in a package instead of four. Problem was sorted out very quickly.

Having said that, I've not been entirely convinced by Scan's choice of some components when I looked at their DAW PCs two years ago. Particularly regarding cooling and cases - my experience has been that for minimum fan and other noise Noctua take some beating. The PC in my sig has only two fans, both Noctua 140mm running on reduced voltage, one on a big Noctua cpu cooler and the other extracting air from the back. It's nearly inaudible from six feet way in a quiet room.

I doubt there's anyone in the UK doing a better job though, at least not at those prices. Quiet PC are also worth taking a look at for components and builds and it's always worth checking what the components in a ready-built PC would cost if you assembled it yourself.

They were one of the companies I've been getting quotes from for my new DAW John, but I haven't placed an order yet.

Also got quotes from http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/

I bought my DAW from Scan a couple years ago. Its never missed a beat (which is more than can be said for my playing . )

My experience is not recent but I found both the product and the service to be top notch.

15 years ago they sold me a computer that non stop froze and kept passing the buck with support. I should have gone to small claims court but I didn't. I also bought a hard drive from the on the behalf of another company which they refused to swap out about 5 years ago.

I have my own reasons not to touch them with a barge poll..... Hopefully their customer service has improved but an elephant never forgets.

My laptop was from pcspecialist, and I have no complaints. I still have the same laptop after over three years and I have recently put larger SSD's in it and upgraded to W10...

Back then they used a CLEVO as the base machine, and as far as I am concerned, they are really good. My full spec is in my sig below

Thanks James and Andy I am impressed with pcspecialist pricing and I may well just have to bite the laser cartridge and go buy either an :-

i7-5820K (3.3GHz) 15MB Cache (6 cores 12 threads) or perhaps even an

i7-6700k (4.0GHz) 8MB Cache (4 cores 8 threads) .

Currently running a i7-2600K (3.4Ghz) 8MB Cache (4 cores 8 threads)

Any thoughts on processor choices.

Good question Wookiee... And I don't know the answer.

When I bought mine, I set a budget and then used the excellent pcspecialist pricing tool to work out what I could get for the price. I remember that there was a massive jump in price if I went to the next processor up and I decided to go for double SSD instead, ditching the optical drive in favour of an SSD caddy.

But I take it you're going for a desktop?

Although I'm pretty stationary at the moment, I would not swap my laptop for a desktop any day. If I'm at my day to day desk, I hook it up to a 24" benq monitor, but I can go mobile if I wish and take my studio anywhere I want. And you get the UPS of course...

Anyway, good luck with your DAW upgrade... I hope it goes well and you're happy with your choice

This may be a problem most of the X99 chipset Mob's being offered to not have any PCI slots and do not offer any Firewire cards as a result.
