Yes, you can float the console window.

That was one of the things that put me off Studio One initially. They were so proud of their single-window design, but it made no sense to me. Great for a laptop, but I like to stretch out over multiple monitors and would rather have the screen height for the track view.

It wasn't the only limitation that made me dismiss S1 back then. However, they've been busy since version 1. 3.5 is a pretty significant update, including lots of small usability efficiencies. At the rate they're going, I suspect they'll catch up to SONAR in 2-3 years.

Found it - it was over in the left hand corner of the console view, where the PRV was in the right hand corner.

Instruments seem to load up fast as in sonar but S1 takes more time to start up than Sonar. Sonar starts up almost immediately with plugin scans running in the background.

I love the easy set up for multiple instances of VSTi outputs. Pretty amazed. Midi features like quantize, swing are pretty easy to deal with than sonar. Search function in insert fx rack is quite a plus. S1 also has smart swipe function of sonar. Pretty amazed with the easy navigation between multiple instruments and plugin windows (just like how we navigate to different tabs in web browsers) these are well made out.

Hope they develop the track template feature soon. Also the lack of numeric meter in console is not a surprise(not many daws have this). Is there a workaround? Only the master bus seem to have this in S1.

Sonar could also recall the last kept fader level in the console. You can right click and select in the faders. This was a very useful feature. I can never mix without this

No auto save option based on num of changes either.

How do people find loading speeds for VSTs into tracks in S1??

I have tried on the SAME PC with S1 first, two vsts ( Kontakt & Arturia Analog Lab 2 ). I tried in S1 first .. took near 1 minute to load Arturia and about 40 secs to load Kontakt.

I then closed S1 and opened Sonar Platinum. Both loaded within 10 seconds or less. Hardly windows caching across two different daws ie making 2nd daw opened faster?

Try this test yourselves?

Reboot, then open sonar FIRST and see if S1 opens the VSTs faster - that sounds like a memory cache issue

Yes, that is how I have it set up on my monitors.

Can the track view and console view be displayed on separate monitors in Studio One? I thought I read on one of these threads that you can not split them to two different monitors. This would be a big deal for my preferred workflow.

Yes - I have the console view on a touch screen and the track view on my second so I can even do the "touchy feeling" thing. Not mentioned or asked about but Studio One does support "touch."

Take care,

Edit:
Just realized there are similar Studio One Q&A discussions in the "Software" forum -- where this really belongs.  I'll post my questions in the Software forum.  Any chance some of these Studio One threads can be merged?   Thanks to the moderators who are doing a great job of managing all of this.

Really appreciate the posts comparing features between SONAR and Studio One.  I plan to download the Studio One demo soon. For those already familiar with the product, does Studio One provide similar functionality to these SONAR features:

1.) Drag & Drop tempo detection. Perhaps this is part of S1 Melodyne ARA integration.
2.) Drum replacer.
3.) File formats import and export (broadcast wave, mp3, etc).
4.) Ripple editing equivalent.
5.) Tempo maps with features equivalent to SONAR.
6.) VST formats (VST2, VST3).  Think I read DX is not available.
7.) Track/Clip property editing. Saw sonarman1's post above: hasn't found clip inspector yet in S1.
8.) External insert (yes, it's obscure, but handy).
9.) Keyboard short-cut customization.
10.) Flexible snapping (i.e. on/off, snap to time, beats, etc).
11.) Effects side-chains.

Probably enough for now.  I'll discover some of these after getting the demo.

Hi Tom,

Here is a link that compares lists the features of the Studio One versions:

Definitely try the demo to see if it works for you. I will add comments to your questions below...

Yes, but Melodyne is probably the best route.
2.) Drum replacer.
Nothing in the GUI, but if you want to substitute a different drum plug on a MIDI track you can change the instrument.
3.) File formats import and export (broadcast wave, mp3, etc).
Yes - see link above.
4.) Ripple editing equivalent.
Ah that dreaded phrase - Yes through "work arounds."
5.) Tempo maps with features equivalent to SONAR.
Yes
6.) VST formats (VST2, VST3).  Think I read DX is not available.
Yes
7.) Track/Clip property editing. Saw sonarman1's post above: hasn't found clip inspector yet in S1.
Yes - click the "i" above the Tracks in the Console view to open the properties info for a selected track.
8.) External insert (yes, it's obscure, but handy).
Yes - there is a plug that allows you to send signals out and back to/from outboard gear.
9.) Keyboard short-cut customization.
If you mean something like templates, no. But you can color tracks, move views to other monitors, turn on and off parts of the interface to get them out of the way.
10.) Flexible snapping (i.e. on/off, snap to time, beats, etc).
Yes
11.) Effects side-chains.
 Yes

If you Google it, you will probably find a Studio One vid on your question.

Groove 3 has a bunch of vids, and I get the feeling that Johnny Geib at HomeStudioTrainer.com will be getting a bunch of traffic. He has really good training vids there as well. Almost forgot Home Studio Expert  - http://www.studio-one.expert/

Take care,

Hey Tom B,

I've been playing with the S1 demo for a day or so...I can answer a few:
  • Drum replacement is pretty slick.  You enable the "bend audio" which is roughly equivalent to the AudioTransient veiw in Sonar.  Let it analyse, set the threshold appropriately and then just drag the clip to an instrument track and it converts to MIDI notes with relative velocities.
  • As for clip edits, if you have a clip highlighted and enable the "edit" tab, the clip shows up there for editing.
  • Snapping works well as it automatically adjust based on the zoom level....I think you can manually set it, but the auto setting worked for everything I needed.
  • Keyboard shortcuts...yes.  There is also macro functionality to do multiple functions.

The two things I REALLY like are:
1.  The multitrack drum quantitization works so simply.  Group the drums, analyst transients on the kick and snare, select those to as the "guides", apply.  Voila!  No adding to pool or bouncing a kick snare guide track.  It was awesome.  Remember we are talking about spending a 5 minutes with a YouTube video to learn it.

2.  The "Project" concept.  You have a mastering view on which you can drag the tracks.  You have separate inserts available for each track as well as global ones for the project.  All the normal export options, ID3 Tag encoding...as well as ISO image if your client still wants a CD.  The huge deal for me is that if you change the mix of a track, it automatically updates the rendered track on the mastering view leaving all your edits for trimming the head and fades in place.  So much easier than Ozone.

It's been extraordinarily easy to pickup.  I really want to pull the trigger, but I worry about the long term.  It seems that Cubase is the safer choice, but without a demo until later I won't know for sure.
