  • I am not the only one with "mixed" feelings regarding CBB (p.3)

Am I the only one who is baffled by the sense of entitlement about being shown some sort of "roadmap?"

Was this something that was once a regular part of being a Cakewalk customer? Gibson or Roland or whomever used to tell everyone on the forum about their business plans?

Is it even something that people look for when choosing DAW software? I've never seen it mentioned in reviews.

PROS:
Price, Console View, Stability, Bundled Effects

CONS:
Cluttered interface, Lack of roadmap

Any software, really. I've worked in the industry and participated in beta programs and was required NOT to reveal plans for future development. Why would any tech company reveal details about what they are planning? To save their competitors the trouble of engaging in industrial espionage?

Agreed.

" I really used to like SONAR's UI but currently I can't work with this program"

But the UI has been the same since X1

Have you been unable to work with it since then?
And you're still here?

Cakewalk used to give us a heads up of what was coming in the next release - i.e. the stuff they've almost finished, maybe that's what they're alluding to?

Publishing a long term roadmap however, might be unwise as you're letting your competition know what's coming, giving them the chance to implement those features first.

Roadmaps are fine for enterprise software and open source projects, but for a DAW, not so much.

From a personal point of view I'd love to know what's coming up, but there's always the danger that some people move DAW simply because their #1 wishlist feature isn't on the roadmap. I doubt if BandLab want to take that risk.

Sorry no sale as far as the video goes .Simply way too annoying to have to sit through "your conversation" with the game grabbing all the screen time .

I am beginning to think this entire OP post was a sham. I clicked on the YouTube link and I am just pissed that I did.

WTF, Video game in the background?

What a load of crap.

Actually, Scott the guy that did the video is fairly well known. He's done a few Sonar tutorials on YouTube, and supplied the "Withered Moment" demo that shipped with Sonar Platinum. So he's obviously had ties to Cakewalk Inc in the past.

I share his frustration with the Clip Editing issues as they've been there for a while now, and several people have reported issues, myself included.

I do think however the video is a bit of an over-reaction, not to mention harsh on BandLab seeing as they're only really at the beginning of the journey with CbB, and a fair few bugs have been fixed.

It's a bit early to comment on 2018.08.32, but 2018.07 has been absolutely rock solid for me.

Long may it continue!

Perfectly said, Mark! It is almost what I think about CbB and this thread.

I like your post, because it is more neutral (to what the OP said) than some of these woohoo style responses. And frankly, I have also some kind of "mixed feelings" about CbB, but I agree with you that we have to be a little patient.

For me, I don't have a problem with the DAW.  Cakewalk by Bandlab is fine and I'm glad it's there and free.  My concern is what about products like Z3TA+2, Dimension Pro, Rapture Pro and the others?  They're still hanging in limbo.

I was just about to purchase Z3TA before they shut it down back last November.  I don't want or need it now because I spent $200.00 on Arturia's DX7 V back in April, but I'm sure there are many wondering about the synth and other stuff besides the DAW.

I know you don't want to hear this but go try and find another free DAW (Audacity, Bitwig, what ever) like CbB and show me the same roadmap laid out for its users.

I would like to know what big features are guys working on. It was before, like ripple edit, mac version of Sonar. That is ok.

No problems, crashes or mixed feelings here.

I would have happily kept using SONAR as-is forever. It was stable and did everything I needed it to do. Having it continue to be supported was just a bonus. Totally agree with bitman's assessment - Cakewalk is SPlat++.

Perhaps you could elaborate on your UI issues. I don't really see much difference between Cakewalk and SONAR in terms of the UI.

I think it has been a misunderstanding (probably due to my weird english ahaha). I was trying to say that I really liked the SONAR PLATINUM UI design as I love the CBB UI since it is the same, but I can't work with only a beautiful UI. I had been experimenting crashes, tons of audio dropouts and some Waves plugins extrangely dissappearing (the vst3 version of Waves Grand Rhapsody Piano for example). Also, as Scott, I think that Audiosnap palette is broken and some editing tools seems outdated compared to things like REAPER. I would like to see substantial changes in that direction instead of tiny "monthly updates" with cosmetic features and non deep bug fixes. In the past, I could understand the existance of monthly updates because there was a monthly subscription model but today there is no need on keep going that way. I am grateful to Bandlab for giving this amazing DAW for free and for removing all the "bloatware" but I don't want to be in an eternal "insiders" program with this monthly updates system. Honestly I hate it.
P.D.: For example, take a look on the latest 2018.08 update. Meng said that it has been delayed because they want to introduce a new feature but it hasn't been ready and the developers must remove it in order to launch this 2018.08 release. A release that basically add the option to remove the insignificant "new feature" of 2017.07 and, in addition, a new one that needed a hotfix few days later because it was completely broken. All of that make me laugh and I just don't understand why not to wait and test the things properly, releasing substantial updates only when they are ready.
