FATAL ARTS 6
Hello.  I'm trying to find out why my Music Creator 6 will not let me record.  i was having a problem with the built in microphone in my computer, but fixed the problem.  While this mic problem was occurring, I was able to use my music creator "record" button, but would get only a flat line on the track.  Now I have updated the driver and software for the on-board microphone, and have tested it.  The microphone works correctly now, but now when I attempt to record tracks, the "record" button does not activate.  Instead of turning red and beginning the track like it should, the button depresses and does not change color.  The track progress does not start and i am left with no ability to record.  I am not able to find anything on Cakewalk's support or any other website to assist me with this.  If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.  I am at a loss as what to do.  Thank you.

Hello...and welcome.

Lets see if we can help you a bit.

Start off by telling us about the computer and the sound card you are using.

Also include the operating system version and if its 32 or 64 bits.

It's a Toshiba Satellite P205-S6237.  The sound card I am not sure of, and don't know how to figure out. It will be the standard one to this model.  The operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.

try changing to MME driver mode.

"P" for preferences on the keyboard, then on the pull down menu, change the DRIVER MODE to MME

let it run tests.

then.....

go get yourself a USB soundcard/interface and a traditional mic.  you'll be much happier.

check my website for some recommendations.

It's already running on MME 32-bit mode.  I've tried the external microphone and haven't had luck with that either.  The record button still won't function properly.

Just a heads up... in the "for what it's worth" department.....

I have a Dell Inspiron with factory card. I've had the laptop for over 6 years and have tried several times to get it to run Music Creator successfully.  It never has. Under any of the driver modes.

I have to use the external interface/sound card with it.  Your's may be similar.

Music Creator 6 is the latest version and is both W7/32 and W7/64 compatible. So that should not be the issue. The sound card in the laptop is not designed to work well with Cake products and that may be causing the issue.

After running the Wave Profiler  for MME, be sure to select the default sound card as audio in and out. It should work OK with audio..... midi and soft synths might be a totally different issue however.

The best option, as Beagle pointed out, is, and especially if you are at least halfway serious about recording music in an efficient manner, would be to purchase a USB audio and midi interface. It is an external sound card that IS designed to work well with MC6 using ASIO (the best) audio driver.

keep us posted how it goes.

Yeah, I had it running before just fine when I had Windows Vista Home Premium on it and had no issues.  The quality wasn't that great but it was getting the job done.  But the comp crashed and I had to upgrade to something different.  Now I got the microphone working perfectly, but Cakewalk seems to be having the issues now, and I've sen nothing on their sites or in their support about the record button failing.  But I will try this external thing and see how it goes.  I really appreciate all the help from the both of you.  I'll keep you updated.  Thanks again.

The external interface (available at many of the bigger music stores) is going to be the answer.

Most of the stores have a no faults return policy on hardware so in the rare event it doesn't solve it... you can return the interface.

You may have a few minor bugs when installing the interface but normally, install according to the instructions and you will be up and running in short order.

let us know.... someone is generally around this forum most of the time..... I'm off to do some hunting and will be gone for the weekend....

Every one here who is serious about recording either at the professional level or just as a fun and serious hobby uses some sort of external interface that runs ASIO drivers.

It really makes the software work smoothly, like it was designed to do.

I could not do what I do musically without a decent interface.

Focusrite, Presonus, M-Audio are among the better and more favored ones in use here.
