My display will not turn off when using the machine, only if it sits idle for a few minutes.

That sounds like it is a feature of the monitor rather than the OS. As mentioned above, my secondary monitor shifts itself to standby immediately on loss of input. The monitor may also have a "static input" standby in it (ECO settings?)

Here's what happens in my case. My desktop stays active with no screen saver and the display stays active. I bring up a project with Sonar Platinum and if I walk away and come back, the display is off. I press play on the keyboard and it's back. This didn't happen in Windows 7.

You must have different default settings than you had before. Mine is set to behave exactly as your machine. I'm still learning Win 10 so I'm not sure where that setting is. It seems that many of my Win 7 settings transferred over, but not all.

Have you tried high power profile? Windows has profiles for power usage to try to not waste electricity. Crank up your electric usage to see if it is a setting in there that is causing your blues.

Also disable selective suspend for USB.

I'll try to replicate at home tonight and give better feedback.

First screen for editing a power plan has as the first item: "turn off the display."

It is also listed as Display in the advanced power settings.

Setting to '0' is the same as 'never.'

Ok, I think I found what's going with Windows 10.
I had all the settings for sleep, hibernation set correctly.  The problem was Windows 10 was not excepting the default settings. For instance, when I was setting up Cortana for speech I couldn't get it to work even though the slider for speech was on. I turned it off then on again and saved. It started working. So I did the same thing with all of the sleep, hibernation, display settings. Now it working like it should.

I'm not sure if this is a bug in Windows 10 or an upgrade error from Windows 7.

Thanks for all the replies.

So sounds like toggling the settings fixed it... yes?

Hello, guys. Thanks for your such nice post. Actually to say, I didn't meet the trouble that you described on your post. To Windows 10, there are some errors on it before. Such as Windows 10 blue/black to death, Windows 10 crashing, freezing and how to sue a Windows password key to recover Windows 10 password. But I don't know the trouble about Windows sleep mode. Sorry to say that I can't help you.
