I have the Steinberg US22, and it is quite solid.

Love my Tascam US-16x08, so I'm biased.

Both of the units you're considering can be powered separately, and not just from the USB buss, which is great, but...

One difference I note is that the Tascam takes a standard DC power plug & brick, while the Steinberg uses a second USB port. I think that makes the Tascam a little more flexible. My Nektar P6 has 2 USB ports, one for communicating and one for power, so that ties up 2 ports on my PC. I happen to have plenty (6 USB2 and 4 USB3), so not a problem for me. Just something to be aware of.

Drivers for the US-NxN series are developed and supported in-house by Tascam. Maybe Bob can clarify the driver development for his UR22.

I really like the Tascam preamps, and I especially like the fact that the mains are buffered on power up/down. No pops, if I forget to turn my monitors off first. I'm assuming that the US-2x2 has the same buffering. That is worth something to pre-Alzheimer's me!

Or use a good wall/usb transformer?

I was quite impressed by what Craig Anderton had to say about the Tascam:-

I have a Tascam (backup unit).  It is OK, but can't really compete with my MOTU unit.

I respect Craig Anderton and he is very knowledgeable but you also have to consider he works for Gibson, who owns Cakewalk and Tascam.  Several years ago, he was (apparently) affiliated in some way with Roland and was endorsing the Roland Octa-Capture recording interface unit.

To be fair to Craig, he does acknowledge his involvement with Gibson/Tascam in his post and he tries to stick to facts rather than subjective opinion.

And with all due respect, your MOTU is many times more expensive than either the Tascam or Steinberg.

I got the UR22 MKII to use with an iPad. It works great for that and I really like it. With all of these small interfaces, manufacturers speak to how great the preamps are for the cost. With the UR22 MKII d-pre (yamaha) - it's the truth. These are one of the best small interface preamps I've heard this side of the Tascam UH7000. They sound very open/clear with a natural sounding warmth. Surprising for the cost.

There are places, other than this forum, where he is touting Gibson products.  e.g. there are a couple of videos on the Sweetwater Music web site of him "talking" about several Gibson owned products.

As I noted Craig is very knowledgeable and I consider him in the "Guru" category for his many years with music electronics.

I ordered the Tascam 2x2.  I hope it has a lot more input gain than the new M-audio 2x2!
