  • LP EQ issue with Addictive Drums - bug?

I'm working on a mix that uses Addictive drums with real bass, real guitars and a few synths etc, that when I insert LP EQ in the master bus, Addictive Drums starts dropping beats as though it spent too long at the bar before the session and keeps dropping his sticks etc. Disabling LP EQ makes Addictive Drums sober up again instantly!
 
Addictive drums is on a simple instrument track which is patched through to a "Drums" bus that is patched to the master bus. Everything else is currently patched straight to the master bus. Inserting LP EQ to the master bus FX screws up Addictive Drums.
 
Is this a known bug/issue? Can anyone else confirm the issue? Is there a work around - other than to use another eq plugin (I'm wanting to try out LP EQ)?

Linear Phase plugins induce a lot of Plugin Delay Compensation. This needs to be matched by an increase in the 'Prepare Using' Buffer in MIDI Playback and Recording preferences to avoid 'dropped' notes. The newer default of 250 is too low for a lot of projects, even without LP plugins. The old default of 500ms should take care of it, but you can go higher if necessary.
 
EDIT: Ideally you'll have MIDI tracks frozen to WAV files before you get to the point of using mastering plugins with lookahead buffers that require PDC. Alternatively, you can use a non-linear phase EQ or change the 'Precision' to Non-Linear in the LP plugin.

If you are tracking with virtual instruments, try clicking on the "Expert" button in the LP-EQ window, and select Non-Linear precision.  You can still use the EQ bands like normal, but without the delay.
 
When I do that all my VSTi latency goes away.

Thank you both for the info. I always like to start mixing while I'm still working on tracking. My background is with tape where that used to work nicely :) It's too early to commit the drums to an audio track. I'll lay off the LP EQ until the final mix then and then up the buffers and stuff. Thanks for the advice. I was really trying to test out the new EQ before it's really needed. I've always been a bit impatient :) Although it's a nice, useful eq and would be handy to use during tracking - I guess it's not up to it... or my computer isn't.

One thing that I've found with these new LP tools is that you can also use the LP-MB compressor sort of like an EQ.  You can use multi-bands to compress or expand different parts of the spectrum with graphic visualization.  Drag them around and see what happens!  Very cool!
 
But the same caution applies, use the non-linear option if you are not working exclusively with recorded audio tracks!

If you use non-linear mode, there's virtually no latency. Use it while tracking, use linear-phase for mixing.

This will not cause latency.

That sounds like a good tip. I've not encountered any issues yet, but will add that to my notebook!

You're more apt to encounter an issue on a heavily populated midi track at a higher bpm.
Regardless, I think 500ms should be the default.

Sorry I went AWOL. Thanks for the tips and advice. So I can turn linear mode off? How do I do that?
