  • Question about automating effects

During one section of a song I want a certain effect on the snare and another certain effect on the kick. I only want these active during one small section. I can find automation for lots of different parameters but, I just want to turn it on then turn it off. Is there a way to do this?
The only other option I can see is to split the kick and snare during that section out to separate tracks and put the effects on them there. It would just be much easier to just automate them on and off on the original tracks.
Hopefully, this is possible and I'm just missing something simple?

It depends on the effect.  from my experience if the effect has a Wet/Dry control that is the best way to control the effect.  IF the control supports an on/off, such as the bands in the Prochannel EQ then you should be able to automate them.  In the track view select the automation/clip/audio snap drop down.  In one of the automation menu items it should give you a list of all the automatible parameters that the selected plug-in supports.

Multi-ing, (or copying just a part of the track to a different track) is also a common practice to do this kind of thing as you mentioned.

Thanks reginaldStjohn.
Just seems like there should be a simple way to turn an effect on/off or turn an effect send on/off with automation.

If there is no on/off option provided and the plug-in is VST3 format there should be a "Host Bypass" option in the parameter list.

If you're dealing with audio  tracks, just split the section you want the fx applied into it's own clip and use the Clip Fx bin

when ever I have a parameter that I can not find in the automation list, I will arm the R and W in the plug in,
Then move that button / slider. Then it shows up in automation / or the lane.

I know this is probably not what you are looking for, I simply reply to your posts because your a good guy

Or put the FX in a bus and automate the send levels from the source tracks (assuming it's an effect like delay or chorus and not EQ or compreasor).
