  • Lenses what do you think about them? (p.13)

I didn't "get" lenses at first, but what turned the corner for me is making very specific ones. For example I created a lens for bouncing down tracks to a final stereo mix.

I've dabbled with lenses and modified a few. Right now it's easy to forget them in the course of working, but when I do remember to use them it's instant payoff. I also like screensets for rotating between a couple of views. Nice to be able to press a key and change the view. I think another brother of these two would be mix recall. Trying to remember to use that more often as well. Must remember...

What kinds of settings/options/etc did you exclude/include for your exporting Lense? Just curious. You insight might spark something in me or others.

Lens' is about global Vs. per project settings.
What ever a screenset does for your per project settings, a Lens will do for every project you load (plus a boatload more).

For example we can import screensets from one project to another, however, project 1 (already established project with custom screensets) must be loaded in order for (new project) project 2 to be able import from.

Lens' lets you create this custom layout and use it from project to project. we are talking so many different settings its near impossible to list them all without taking up the whole page. but things, Views, Icons, Layouts, Buffer settings, PRV setting, exc.

the best example I could give is - when your set up for recording audio, you don't want a prv docked or the control bar filled with non sense so you create a basic layout ( a meter bridge) with faders, MSR buttons, punch in, possibly the inspector and that's all. this Lens would be called: Basic recording.

however when its time to mix, you may want a detailed control bar with marker, editing modules. the PRV open for midi instruments. It opens a lot of possibility's for not only ease of use but also layout space.

Hope this helps chuck.

Thank you Chuck. Yeah, I totally get Lenses, I was just curious about the specifics of Craig's Lense that he uses to bounce to stereo track. Thank you for taking the time to write all that, I appreciate it very much.

I have not used Lenses a great deal yet, but I am more than open to using them. I would love to see specific examples of how others are using them as that might spark some inspiration for my own uses.

For me that would remove a ton of functionality as I have different screensets for every project.
I think screensets need to stay on a per project level.

Steve, I can learn something here. Why do you have different screensets for every project? A couple examples would be helpful. I have the same screen sets for every project I work on and mostly switch between 2 of them.

I think I might be missing something so I would appreciate your comments.

Thanks,

Walt

Hi Walt -
I have screensets on a project oriented basis because every project I do is different.
This week the 2 most getting attention are very different.
"Timeless Heart"
has a big drum section that's supposed to sound like a real drummer so I have a set called Drums. 16 midi tracks and 16 audio tracks and the set has only those 32 tracks in TV, 2 prv, 16 tracks in one of them and 4 tracks in the other. Console view has just those 16 audio tracks with prochannel open on all of them
and just 2 busses showing. Drums and Drum FX.
The whole project also has a real bass guitar, 4 acoustic guitar tracks, 1 electric guitar track.
So, for the drums I don't want to see the other tracks.
The Bass screenset just shows 1 huge audio track in TV (track view).
The Acoustic screenset just shows 4 acoustic guitar tracks in TV taking up all of the space.
THe electric guitar set is 1 audio track in TV taking up all of the space.
Then I have a "Busses" screenset which shows all busses, 8 or more.
So, it's a lot easier for me to just go to the drums set to fix something in the drums
and then back to Electric Guitar to continue recording the solo.

The other piece "Trancer"
is Omnisphere based with Adictive Drums2 and Trilian for bass.
Same idea here but specific different sets for AD2 which is split out to individual Audio outs (10 or more IIRC)
and also individual midi tracks arrived at by SplitNoteToTrack.cal (name might be wrong but that's what it does)
So, you see, my AD2 screenset is just AD2
my Omnisphere set is just 8 tracks of audio and 8 or midi for omnisphere in TV and the console has only those audio tracks showing with ProChannel open on all of them.

So, along with those 2 projects I also have at least 20 or 30 unfinished projects all having their own screensets.

I hope that helps.

I'm looking at the new help for Sonar 2016.11 and one of the new features are lenses. Apparently the name is changed from Workspaces to Lenses. Because I have Sonar Home Studio I am looking at the ones in it. Sonar Platinum may have them by the end of this month.

At present I don't see a huge difference from Screensets except Lenses are global. They can be applied to all projects. Home studio has a limited set that can not be edited where Sonar Platinum and Professional are user editable. More can be created other the stock ones included.  Sort of have it your way.  I don't know if there is a limit on how many can be created. Also a lens Manager is included with Platinum and Pro.

I know its early but just wondering what the forum thinks.

Layouts, which preceded screensets, were also global, I much preferred them to screensets.   Cakewalk's going round and round, removing features and putting them back.

I liked Layouts too.

Layouts would be fine if every project was the same and had the same kind of content and the same number of tracks.
Screen sets have been a real time-saver for me and I can't wait to get lenses integrated into the workflow.

For me it's one of the best new features. I might work on 10 or more projects at a sitting. In the past when I opened older projects that were done on completely different computers or versions it took a few minutes just to set the screen up properly before I could start work. Now they all open exactly the same with only a few hick ups with multi dock.
And I also work this way on Home Studio and it is a bummer you can't save lenses.  For that version of Sonar Lenses is pointless.
