can someone explain how lenses differ from screensets - are they global screensets or is there more to it than that?

To me they appear to be about reducing clutter. One can show only what is needed for a particular task. Reducing the modules in the Control bar for example. They are not so much about having various views at ones disposal. Though screensets work along side lenses. Possibly the single most important thing about lenses is they are global. Screensets are on a per project level. I may be wrong but workspaces and lenses are one and the same thing.

thanks for the reply John, but i was more fishing for what the are, what's included, rather than the intended affect they might have... from the docs it looks like "a screenset plus some other stuff"

Sorry I misunderstood. Platinum comes with the following lenses. None, Advanced, Basic, Make Beats, Mix, and Record, Plus you get to save them and make a new one via the lens manager. Its very intuitive to make one.

Correct. They changed the name because other programs use the term "workspaces" for functionality that's less capable.

haha, which programs? visual studio/tfs uses the term, but that's the only other app i can think of?

Think harder, I don't make stuff up. For starters, there's Cubase, Pro Tools, Samplitude, anything by Adobe, etc.

Search on a program name + "workspace." Search functions on the interwebz are a beautiful thing for those who need to augment their ability to think.

fair enough, but i don't have any of those apps, hence my question - but why should i have to qualify your statement, surelynthe onus is on you? the interwebz are full of what's now being called "fake news"...

just tried lenses for a bit and they seem a bit confusing when used in conjunction with screensets (e.g. screen set "matrix" and lense with matrix disabled ...)

I reckon they just subtract from whatever should be displayed on a global level. Still need to think of a proper use for it ... apart from a tiny laptop screen there it is obvious ... but on the big studio screens, hmmm, eveything fits, everything has got its place ... ideas, suggestions?

It was the "haha" that seemed to provide a context that went beyond being merely inquisitive.

First, I don't create fake news. Second, I'm a gentleman, and I didn't want to spell out by name programs whose workspaces offer less functionality that what SONAR would offer if it chose that name. But since you asked, and since you believe it's my obligation to justify what I say even though I think it's clear I do research, I responded to your "haha" question even though I would have preferred not to.

the "haha" was genuine reaction to such a sweepingly broad statement, with no supporting info, sorry if it caused kerfuffle, you don't have to respond to every post

I just updated to 2016.11. Lenses load markedly slower than screensets for me. Slower than I'd like, anyway. Plus, it seems you can't have them as part of the control bar. That's kinda big for me, as I dock the control bar at bottom of my Raven touchscreen and switch plenty when working. I wonder if it's possible to have lenses become a module in the control bar...

A main difference between Screensets and Lenses is that Lenses allow some control over what displays in the Views menu to remove clutter.  For example, if you never use the Matrix or Big Time views, then you can remove them from the Views menu.

Hope this helps,
