A cool jazz piece.  Nice tone on the lead guitar - nice chops.

Really nice, Bill.    Loved the tone, the vibe and the ambiance.    Towards the end I actually heard a bit Steve Howe-ness.

Hi Bill, great tone, vibe and playing! Are you using flat-wound strings? Really enjoyed the volume swells toward the end. Very nice!

Hi, Wayfarer,

Nice playing and nice tone. (The bass sort of mushes a bit into the background for me, it might sound better and more jazzy with a little upper mid EQ growl and be brought up in the mix but sinces its all about the guitar... it's not a big deal! ;-)

I just recorded a jazz guitar for a vocal/guitar ballad and med tempo tune. Not sure what I should do to it. Would you mind providing some detail what you did to get it? In particular, I'm using a Direct signal, so I've got to use a plug in to simulate the cabinet, amp and settings then pick some reverb. Did you compress it much? Is it miced or direct from the guitar?
Thanks!
Bruce

Hey Bruce. Actually I just used a 335 through an old Vamp 2 for everything using the Mesa Boogie Mark II C setting. It's called "California Clean" on the unit. I had both the volume and tone rolled about halfway back on the guitar probably. I don't think I used any compression.

If you're using a guitar with single coils I can tell you that my Telecaster sounds much better through the "Modern Class A" setting. (It's supposed to be based on a Matchless Chieftain.) I usually hit it with compression using the Tele, especially if I'm playing clean, and I boost the the highs on my cheap Behringer XENYX H1622 mixing desk at 3Khz, mids at 500hz, and the lows at 60hz. I just run the 1/4" outputs to the 1/4" inputs of a 15-year old Echo MIA Midi sound card.

I always use the single 12" open back cab setting for everything.

You can pickup used Vamp 2 units for $30 or $40 all day long.

Anyway, that's all I do. It's a very inexpensive way to go that sounds pretty darn good in my opinion.

Thanks for asking. Good luck!

Bill

Thanks Bill. Do you think I can get something close with just plugins from a direct box? I don't want to rout it out and through any outboard gear and it's already recorded earlier today. We'll see!
