This song is off my fourth album "Apartment 4".  Just to let you know, I used the Abbey Road Vinyl Plug-In on the mastering of the mix in Sonar.  I think it adds warmth to the mix.  Thanks for listening.

Snare sounds a little undernourished compared to the guitars. The whole thing is super loud. There's not much room to turn it up...I have it all on about 15% volume in Soundclick and turning it up just blasts the ears.

I like your singing voice and the song works but I just reckon there's mix and volume issues. Just my opinion.

montezuma - thanks for listening - I appreciate your comments.  Maybe I should pull back a bit on the limiter a bit, concerning the volume.  I know the rhythm guitars are loud in the mix, but I kind of liked it that way.

Wow, yeah. I mean, it sounded okay to me at first but I downloaded the MP3 file and it is quite a squashed mix. So, yeah, perhaps pull back overall on the limiter, get some dynamic range back...

Also, drop your peak down to at least -1dB.

I ran this through a LUFS meter and it told me the "true Peak" was well over the peak limit. And Sound Forge was showing it to be clipping. LUFS integrated level was -7.4 LUFS so if you put this onto iTunes, for instance, it would be turned down by around 7 dB. And the dynamic range was showing as 1.2 LU which is not a lot, I don't think, even for something like this.

That said, a good tune all the same

cheers

synkrotron - I dropped the peak down to -1db  (maybe I should decrease it even more) and I pulled back on the Adaptive Limiter quite a bit.  Thanks for lending me your ears on this one.

Not a problem, Doug, I don't get much of an opportunity to help around here... I just got in early, and it really helped that you had downloading enabled for this tune.

Did you update your Soundclick file?

Thanks - I just updated the song on Soundclick.

Hiya Doug,

I downloaded the latest version and I think it is still a bit too hot.

You said -1dB, but did you mean -0.1?

Reason I ask is, when I open the MP3 file in Sound Forge again, this is what it looks like:-

So, it is still clipping in places, although not as bad as before.

How do you output your audio from SONAR? As WAV or MP3?

One thing to remember when converting from WAV to MP3 is that the WAV may well not be clipping, but when you convert to MP3, there is always a chance that clipping will occur in the conversion process. Something to do with "intersample peaks."

So, take it down some more and see how that goes

cheers

Andy - I turned it down -1db in the stereo master project. Today I went back to the project with all my tracks and discovered that I had the Voxengo Crunchessor on the master bus, which squashed the mix.  Anyway, I took care of that and uploaded a new version which shouldn't have clipping.  To answer your other question, I output the file as a WAV and then convert to MP3.

Thanks again for your help,
Doug
