I am new to the hobby and will (hopefully) be setting up a small rig with a Moxf8 or Roland FA-08 and Sonar.  I was looking at the following headphones and monitors.  Can anyone tell me if these would be decent for this price range?

the Sennheiser HD280's are a staple of studios and home studios.  they will work fine.
 
the JBLs will work OK but you're lacking a little on the low end with them.  If you can afford the 8" ones, I'd recommend those instead.  if not, the ones you have or any monitors will work - you'll just have to learn how to use them and how to adjust based on their limitations and especially the limitations of your room.
 
room treatment will also help with speakers which are more "entry level" like these are.

I trust in Beagle and his comments, but just this caveat which may be unfounded.
 
I have the JBL LSR 2300 series, an older 5" model and I like them. When I started home recording in ~2007, I was also given use of some Yamahas 8", an industry standard while the person was abroad for a year.
 
At some point, I was cautioned against the 8" speakers because of bass overload in my spare bedroom (by a pro) who specifically said, the 5" variety was best for mixing under my circumstances. Some have even later seconded that notion by claiming a subwoofer would be contra-advantageous (is that a word?) in smaller non studio environs such as mine.
 
So I have kept the JBLs even though I could have upgraded to the 8" model.
 
Well who am I to know, but I thought I'd throw this out. I am bass challenged in my mixes and like Beagle says, "you'll just have to learn how to use them and how to adjust based on their limitations and especially the limitations of your room"

I recommend you stick with super mainstream - ones that are well-known and established. A good example are the KRK headphones and monitors, but there are others.

Here's why. There are ancillary products that you may get into over time, and those may have presets for the well-established headphones/monitors.

The Focusrite VRM box, which is a very affordable and cool reference mixing unit, has presets for several of the more well established monitors. It's very handy to call up a setting and instantly get into the right mode. It's good for headphone use, and if you have one of the monitor sets it features you can hear how it translates very well.

This has preset calibrations for mainstream headphones and can help increase your perspective when using headphones.

In both of the above ancillary products KRK headphones and/or monitors are included in the presets. Great products by the way. But definitely other brands/models also have presets. Something to consider in your considerations - go mainstream!

+1 for SonarWorks here.  I have the lowest priced headphones Superlux 681s.  I am SURE they don't sound as good as the KRKs, but with SonarWorks they are consistent for me.

Has anyone tried or had any experience with the V-Moda Crossfade Wireless h-phones? I seem to be seeing quite a bit of a buzz about these.....
