Hi All,
I am running a windows 7 laptop with a roland UM-One interface. It goes to my Roland sc880 and thu to my Roland TD7.
I have only just currently changed over from a windows Mellinium based Laptop running Cake walk 4.5 and using the Parallel port into a Midiman.
My old system works well but Ive beed trying to set up the new system. The new system has no problems playing the Work files. Now my Problem::
Sonar 2 does not allow the variations of the instruments to be recognised.
Ive made sure the SC880 instrument definitions are in, even tried changing the controller from normal to "0" to "32". It still will not pick up the instruments im after. capital instrument are not a problem.....
EG: Im using the Patch [3] 000/019 (organ 3). But I want to use the variation [3] 008/019 (Rotary Org ).
as i stated before, Its fine on the cakewalk 4.5 but on the Sonar 2, it wont pick it up
Apologies for the long explanation, but I feel I had to explain it fully.
Any ideas fellow cakewalkers???

When you say Sonar 2 do you mean Sonar2 from the year 2002 or Sonar X2 from 2012?

The setup for instruments definition files is much the same from version to version.

From the manual page 1688.

Importing instrument definitions
When you install SONAR, a few common instrument definitions are already set up for you and ready to use.
SONAR also includes several hundred additional instrument definitions that you can import.
These instrument definitions are stored in text files in your SONAR folder, organized largely by manufacturer. For
example, all the instrument definitions for Roland gear are stored in the Roland.ins file; all the instrument
definitions for Yamaha gear are stored in the Yamaha.ins file. The Misc.ins file contains miscellaneous
instrument definitions.
If SONAR does not include an instrument definition for your MIDI instrument, you can find additional and updated
instrument definitions on the Downloads section of the Cakewalk website (www.cakewalk.com). Simply
download the files to your SONAR folder, unzip if necessary, and import the instrument definitions as described in
“To import instrument definitions” on page 1688.
When you import an instrument definition, it is added to the master instrument definition file Master.ins. The
contents of this file determines the list of instruments that appear in the Assign Instruments dialog box.
To import instrument definitions
1. Go to Edit > Preferences > MIDI - Instruments.
2. Click Define to display the Define Instruments and Names dialog box.
3. Click Import to display the Import Instrument Definitions dialog box.
4. Choose the file that contains instrument definitions for your manufacturer, and click Open. SONAR displays a
list of all the instrument definitions in the file.
5. Choose one or more instruments from the list, and click OK.
6. Click Close to close the Define Instruments and Names dialog box.
The instrument definitions you imported should now appear in the Uses Instrument list in the Assign
Instruments dialog box.

Comment: It looks harder than it is.

Hi John, thanks for the reply. I've done all of that. Downloaded the Roland sc-880 ins. And the Roland td7ins. It still will not pick up the capital sound variations. What I did notice though, when I a/b the two files, one through cakewalk4.5 and sonar x2 the control change of 32 that I've set the file to has changed on sonar x2 to normal. I change it back and it does play correctly. But then I cannot save it as a wk file. Sonar will not allow me to do that unless I save it under their new extensions.
Seems it will be easier to get sonar to play it as intended rather than save it as a new file after altering it. I would have to go through my 1,000 + midis I use and change them all

What do you see in Preferences under MIDI Instruments? This is what I have.

If by chance you have access to your old setup you can copy the old master.ini file to your new setup.
