Hello, everyone

I searched and read many postings here about recording,
yet I don't know exactly how.

I am using Sonar and want to record a midi track
and want to export this recording to wav file.

For this, I created a new audio track and try to record after creating an audio track.
But the audio track didn' t have anything after recording.

When I used Cakewalk old version long time ago,
I remember, at that time, there was an input setting in that audio track.

But in Sonar X version, I cannot find that thing.

Could any of you explain the detail process how to record a midi track (into an audio track???)
and export that to wav file???

Thanks

If the MIDI is driving a soft synth in SONAR, you just use File > Export with source set to Master Bus or Main Outs to render it to WAV file without having to record it in real time.

If the MIDI is driving an external hardware synth, you route the audio output of the synth to an audio input on your audio interface, set an audio track to use that input and record it in real time, then export.

If you have only onboard PC sound as an audio interface, and the MIDI is driving the onboard GS Wavetable synth, you can record it by changing the input in your soundcard's mixer to 'What U Hear' or 'Stereo Mix', but you'd do better to insert Cakewalk TTS-1 (a multi-timbral General MIDI software synth similer to GS Wavetable) or some other soft synth or combination of soft synths to render the audio.

Tells us what's in the project, what instrument(s) the MIDI is driving and what you're using for an audio interface, and we can give more explicit steps.

Hello, brundlefly
Thank you for your detailed help.

But, I cannot upload image files in this reply, there is no such menu here.
So I cannot explain my project settings to you (using captured images)

And I don't understand your saying (below)
If the MIDI is driving a soft synth in SONAR, you just use File > Export with source set to Master Bus or Main Outs to render it to WAV file without having to record it in real time.

I don't understand what that is.... I don't know how to set source set to Master Bus etc while File -> Export

And

Instead, I will explain in text

I am using Sonar X series,

1. I created a normal project file

2. In that file,
select menu Insert --> MIDI track

3. In that MIDI track, I composed a music (using Staff view)

I want to record this MIDI track and want to export it to a wav file.

In preference menu
 Project --> Record
 Comping

And I created a new audio track (for recording)

And in that audio track

Below are selected on default

MME Device --> Stereo Input Mix (Envy...)
Output --> Master

Thanks...

My guess is you are using the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth. The best solution is disable this output in Preferences > MIDI > Devices and use the TTS-1 instead.

In the existing project
Insert > Soft Synth > Direct X > Cakewalk TTS-1
In the "Insert Soft Synth Options" dialog select "First Synth Audio Ouput" and click OK
Set the MIDI track output to "Cakewalk TTS-1 1"
Then
brundlefly
use File > Export with source set to Master Bus or Main Outs to render it to WAV file without having to record it in real time.

In the future instead of inserting only MIDI tracks, insert soft synths and select MIDI track and one of the Audio track options (or an instrument track instead of the MIDI/Audio track selections) in the "Insert Soft Synth Options" dialog to create the appropriate tracks already connected to the synth.
