  • How do you change the default folder location for ProChannel presets?

Hi, everyone - Happy New Year for tomorrow.

I recently upgraded from X1 Producer to Platinum, and bought a faster PC to run it on. I've transferred or recreated most of the settings, templates, etc. from the old set-up. However, when I try to load a ProChannel preset SONAR looks in C:\Users\[my_user]\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum.

This might be because all my projects, settings and other content from X1 were backed up on an external USB hard drive, and I probably opened my first project in Platinum from that location. I've looked at Preferences > File > Folder Locations, and while it's not obvious which of the default folder locations (if any) decides where ProChannel presets should be looked for, none of them is set to that path.

It's not a huge deal, but is there some way I can tell Platinum where to look for ProChannel presets by default, rather than having to browse to where they really are each time I want to load one?

Great question.  I have tried to do this repeatedly but have never found a way.  There may be a registry hack which can accomplish it but I don't know it.  Frustrating.  I have worked around it by putting a shortcut to my custom folder in the default folder.  It takes an extra click but it allows me to store those presets with all my other Cakewalk Content on my data drive.

Anybody elase have an answer?

It's in the registry under the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR\Platinum\UserPaths

Look for the value "ProChannelStripPresetFolder"

Change the data for this value to be the default path of your Prochannel presets.

If you do make the change, don't forget to move your existing Prochannel preset file to the new folder.

I have seen this question a few times. Besides the Registry change, im not really sure there is a way.
Every time I do a reformat, build a new PC I save all my Pro Channel presets. I literally have hundreds.
I copy them to the default folder location I see when I click on the load button in the Pro Channel.

As another small bit of advise, get yourself in to a naming system because when you begin to accumulate a lot of presets you'll find yourself spending days scrolling through presets looking for the one you want.
I label my most frequently used ones like so:

A.Guitars No EQ Light Compression

The reason for the "A" is so it shows up in the list first.
You can also use a numbering system. I also use a similar system.

I make registry changes to change the order my Pro Channel order in the menu (as e can't do that yet from the plug in manager). The last two updates have changed a few of the ProChannels back to their factory defaults. So bare in mind these changes can be overidden by updates

If you prefer not to mess with the registry or want a more permanent way to change default locations, consider using directory junctions.

Hi!  interesting...I still have my ProChannel presets from X1 on their location.  I'm with X3 and I saw that they had numbers before their names in X1...do you think, I can select them in their location from X3 without putting a mess on my system?

I must have not checked the 'notify me when replies are posted' option when I raised this one. Many thanks to you all for the helpful responses - the registry change has worked perfectly.
