Confusion solved then. Since you didn't say, I assumed you were talking about separate MIDI/Synth tracks, not Simple Instrument tracks.

This is the behavior of SI tracks but not individual MIDI tracks where you still have to double click the icon to open the synth view.

Actually I do use individual midi and audio tracks for the synths, instead of simple instrument. the one click does the same thing for both, opening the synth window. The only exception is when using drum maps or external synths

Just went back and tried it again and NOW it's working like you describe. Weird.

Ah, then the conundrum continues. My 2016.12 works as I stated but I skipped .11 so maybe I missed the change, tho I was told updates are cummulative.

I had a quick play with this last night and a single click of either the Midi track or the associated audio track (in a split audio/midi setup) consistently opens the synth gui.

Different strokes...I love that feature. I can finally open a virtual instrument regardless of which track header controls happen to be exposed. But I can see why Gerry finds it frustrating. Habits are hard to break. Luckily for me, I've always been in the habit of clicking on the header background to set focus, so no retraining was needed.

Same here. It never occurred to me to click on an icon to select anything. Besides often they are too small to click on anyway. LOL

i like this feature.   I always had to mute/unmute just to see which synth in the rack is associated with the track i was working on.

I can put up with breaking habits when there's a good reason for the change and now that I see others actually like this, and it's really a feature and not an oversight, I'm fine with it. I still think it would make more sense if it was a double click instead of a single click. If so I'd not have to retrain myself

Me too.  it also beats the "Mouse not working to good" and its hard to do the X2 clicks.
this is a cool feature.
