  • Query: Can I integrate Guitar Pro via Rewire into Sonar for MIDI composition? (p.2)

Beepster, there is 1 other complication with rewire, both programs (sender and receiver) have to be 32bit or 64bit.  Mixing 32bit with 64 bit won't work.  There is a utility/plugin thingy that does allow mixing 32bit with 64bit, but I'm not sure how reliable it is.  I'll track it down if you need it.

Given how awful SONAR's tab support is, I though Guitar Pro 6 would be a nice solution.  Sadly Guitar Pro's MIDI export is pretty much unusable.  It doesn't correctly render slurs/tied notes.   Its MusicXML export is good though, but SONAR doesn't import MusicXML (only export).  So I have been using the open source MuseScore 2 application to convert Guitar Pro's MusicXML to MIDI.

MuseScore has a command line interface which I've written a tiny DOS batch script to run and hooked it to the Windows "Send To" menu so I can just right click a MusicXML .xml file and convert it to a .mid file. Though MuseScore sometimes has issues with some MusicXML files it does a reasonable job most of the time.

Now that I think about it though maybe I'm the only person to not be able to use Guitar Pro's MIDI output.  I've never seen anyone else complain about it.

Pretty sure Guitar Pro 6 doesn't support Rewire, hence my MIDI games.

Thanks, guys.

@John... I don't own a current version of GP.

@shawker... Thanks. I'll look into that so no need but the heads up is appreciated. Exactly this type of insight I'm looking for.

Soooo... armed with this fresh info/understanding of the situation I've gone digging around and alas GP6 (the current version) does not support Rewire. That sucks. Now I do NOT want to add to any kind of internet rumor mill because I have not seen ANY other reference to this aside from some vague references on other forums that GP7 will/might have Rewire capabilities. DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THAT ANYWHERE. Just something to maybe look forward to.

There seems to also be references to a (Presonus) Notion alternate program called "Progression" that supposedly has Rewire capabilities but again DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THAT because I don't see any confirmation as of yet in my precursory searches. I will have to research all that further.

However since GP files are indeed the standard currency for guitar tabs I think I'm simply going to have to suck it up and work around it's limitations (lack of Rewire) and/or wait for GP7 in hopes that they do indeed implement Rewire.

This was mostly an exploratory venture to nail down as many previously unknown variables in my nefarious scheme and has indeed help me gain a better understanding of what I'm facing.

Also, based on some of these prelim searches, there does seem to be quite a bit of bafflegabbery at the fact NOONE has thought to integrate GP (and other highly feature rich notation/tablature programs) into the main DAWs aside from maybe Cubase (and Reaper has apparently added notation recently) but that still does not address my specific needs for GP style editing.

...and there is no way in heckola I'm switching to Cubase because after watching many vids on the modern version... Beepso no likey.

Sorry for bringing up other programs but it's germane to the discussion.

To paraphrase spazzy Shawn from TrustMedia...

Thank you for the extra info. Exactly the type of insight I'm looking for. Don't fully understand it but I will definitely research it further.

Cheers!

I didn't think GP 6 did because if it did it would be listed. Its a major feature after all. I have Progression I'll check if it works with rewire.

Yes Progression does support Rewire. Also it is a 64 bit program.

Beepster,
I got Progression packaged with Fishman Triple Play. I never really used it but still have it around somewhere.
If it becomes important for you, I could dig it out and see if it rewires.

Cool, guys. If you just happen to have a chance to check it then I (and I'm sure others) would be interested in the answer.

Maybe just having this thread pop up in the Googley Moogleys might get the GP developers of their arses and make sure GP7 does indeed have Rewire capability (and 64 bit which based on the comments here it may not... which would suck and put them behind even Avid for modernity).

Thanks again. I have a much clearer picture of the situation now. Knew I could count on my fellow Sonarites.

I looked at the Fishman release notes.
It looks like Progression will only rewire audio. There is no MIDI out which would control synths in sonar or make a MIDI track. You can export MIDI to a file but it looks like you are already doing this.

Progression does not let you play back through TriplePlay or other virtual instruments directly; however, you can export your score from Progression as a MIDI file and, using a Digital Audio Workstation, play your converted score through any virtual instrument compatible with the DAW.

This discusses Studio One and Notion rewired. Again, looks like audio only
