I'm starting a new project and trying to set up a template. There are 2 types, project and track. I have no idea what the difference is and the help files are confusing. I'm looking for some clarification on the issues below:

When I start sonar I want to select "New from Template" and pick my template from that list. These are project templates. If I already have Sonar open, I go to the file menu to open the template. From this direction I can only see track templates. If I redirect the search to the default folder for project templates it shows an empty directory and says that there are no files; but there are.

If I create a template in Sonar and want to save it as a project template, I can't. There's no option to save it as anything other than a track template. I had quit using any templates because they had caused me glitches between versions. The way it sits I'm a bit bewildered.

A project template is saved like a project, but you use a special file type and folder, that you can select in the save file dialog. Actually, a project template is just a project, except that you can select it from the list of the "new project" dialog.

A track template contains one or several tracks. It is saved from an open project and it is inserted into an open project. A track template includes the selected tracks, their instruments and effects, but no midi, audio, or automation data.

A project template is a project treated just a little differently than a normal project, use the "Save As" function setting the "Save As type" and "Go to Folder" as below. Often times, I use a "seed project" instead of a project template. A "seed project" is essentially an empty project with a few additions not much different than a project template. While a project template can hold references to audio files, I find it easier to work with regular projects if track data such as audio is involved, another motivation for "seed projects."

Track templates are a collection of empty track(s), their plug-ins and routing information, intended to be added to an existing project.

Thanks for the input guys.

It looks like the start page isn't updating what it displays. I HAVE saved the template correctly in the Project Templates folder but it doesn't display on the start page. When I select "New From Template" it only shows some of the templates. Mine is in there with the correct file ext. but it doesn't show up.

The flow I'm trying to set up is to start Sonar, select New from Template and then save the new project with the appropriate file name. I'll have to figure out why my template doesn't appear when I select New from Template. For now I'll have to select New and then go to the file menu, select open, navigate to the project template folder and select the template. Something doesn't seem right, but I can work around it.

John. I know in my case, I've had to actually load that custom template at least once before it will show up on the start menu. Also, depending on what the name begins with (Alphabetical) is where it will show up in the menu. So after you create the template, click on new project/template and navigate to the new template in the windows pop up menu, once you load it once, then it is put in to start screens memory. I have a ton of mine on the start screen.

The most important thing in my opinion ..Is saving it in the correct directory. (where templates are stored / use the templates save options)

you'll get it. Keep at it buddy

The first folder in my CWP directory is _New Project.
The underscore raises that folder to the top.
In that folder I have all my "templates"; just regular cwp files.
4/4, 12/8, 44k, 48k, blank; whatever.
I "read only" all my "templates", that way if I don't immediately do a "save as",
I have to "save as" the first time I touch my ` key (that tilde in the upper left corner).
I find "Ctrl + S" tedious, I much prefer a single keystroke; something rarely, if ever, used otherwise.
Its "bound" in all programs that allow custom keystrokes.
Just my "workflow", not exactly what you were looking for, but...

Good Tip! Although the first thing I do is rename the template as a project in a new folder, I can see the possiblitiy of hitting Ctrl S after modifying the template and messing it up. Thanks!

Fixed. I had the template in the right place but restarting Sonar wasn't enough. For some reason it wouldn't show up until I did a full computer shut down and restart. There's an hour I'd like to have back.

Thanks for your time.
