  • Can't get imported wav file to play in Cakewalk Pro Audio 9

Yes, I know, it's antique software, but it sure has served me well for the past 16+ years.

Now I've begun using Band-In-A-Box 2017, and I can generate RealTracks wav files (as opposed to the MIDI files I had been generating in a much older BIAB) which I am using for writing melodies and arrangements.

However, when I try to import a wav file into my Cakewalk, it says it's there, I can see it, but when I hit play nothing happens.

I am a Windows 10 user with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. This computer is only a year old, a HP Envy, if that helps.

I thank you all in advance for any assistance you can send my way.

Does anything else play from Pro Audio 9?
I would think you couldn't even install it on W10.
Obviously if you've been using it for 16 years you know about the settings for ouput.
What driver mode?  Is your audio interface driver set to run at the same sample rate as the wave file?
well it would play but out of pitch.

Try Sonar Home Studio for $49.99.  Designed for Windows 10

Feature Comparison with other Sonar Editions. HS is not crippled, it has the same core features of other Sonar versions.

You just get more instruments, effects, and mixing features as you move up the line.  But for getting current on a modern PC, this is the least expensive way to go.

I almost said the same thing! I'm amazed it even opened on W10.
So + 1 to purchasing Home Studio and then everything will work as expected for another 16 years!

If you do go with a newer version of Cakewalk. you just might want to transfer the midi files from BIAB. Last time I tried the demo of BIAB it was about on par with Cakewalks TTS-1 sound quality. You can certainly do much better than that with Home Studio. There are many few free VST's that are out there which I'm not sure if BIAB allows you to use.

I have a 13 year old Pentium 4 3.0Ghz 2GB RAM Dell Laptop with Sonar 8.5 Producer and Windows XP.  Still boots and runs if I ever get a yearning for nostalgia!

I was disappointed when neither my Ableton Live 5, or my Midi Quest 9.0 XL, would install on Windows 10.  Oh well, that's progress!

Okay, everything appeared correct (thanks, Johnny V), so I just coughed up the fifty bucks and am in the process of installing the Sonar Studio. I'm sure I will have more questions for you guys. Thanks a million for helping me! My creative juices are running yet I was spinning my wheels. A very frustrating place to be, so again, thank you so much for the suggestions, and I'll be checking in with you again soon, I'm sure.

Now, I will be able to combine audio (wav) files with MIDI files in this Sonar Studio, right?

Great time to ask after I've already forked over the dough, right? It's now downloading. Let me know, if you have a moment.

Thanks!

First thing to do once installed is go to preferences and set up your audio interface.
If you don't have an audio interface , set the driver mode to WASAPI exclusive. It works pretty good for me on this laptop I have at work with Home Studio. I don't record any audio, I just fix up midi files to make backing tracks. I added a few freebie VST's to boost HS meagre offerings.
The big difference is BIAB is limited to 32 bit plug ins ( last I checked) and Cakewalk will use just about any 3rd party Plugs and VST's. So your sound pallet is potentially enormous. It why I use Sonar, you get a lot for your money.
I also bought Air's Strike2 Drums from the JRR shop for just $43. I think it's still on sale. It is amazing and holds it's own to all the big name ($$$) drum VST's.
The SI bass that comes with Sonar is still my go to bass. I use the Jazz bass setting.

I have a huge library of soft synth sounds that I picked up after getting Pro Tools 10 about 4 years ago. Are you possibly suggesting that I may be able to use those sounds in my new Sonar Home Studio? If that's the case, I will be busy (and creative) for decades!
