  • [Solved] Command Center is wasting space keeping exactly the same date twice!

Hello,

I was investigating why my space is shorted so fast and discovered CC is keeping exactly (!) the same data twice.I binary compared in both places data to be sure... C:\programdata\Cakewalk\Command Center\C:\Users\All Users\Cakewalk\Command Center\and result is (includes subdirectories) 237 identical files, 0 files different, about 50GB in both. Pretty huge waste. :(Why CC cannot use just kind of reference to the second location (shorcut) if it is really needed to have data referred in 2 places ?? Download path is set in CC to: C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloadsso I can guess it is related to provide data to other OS users, but why keep copy instead of just pointing it?
And in relation to that, question: why CC don't have any option to manage space to let clear some date maybe less needed? :(
Another question about CC - kind of obvious, but maybe I missed something, why CC don't present itself with version number? Why it is required to search exe file and extract that information from it :(

This is true for the entire Cakewalk folders on my system, not just the CC :

C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk

C:\Users\All Users\Cakewalk

265 MB, 16460 files duplicated.

C:\Users\All Users is the same folder as C:\ProgramData. This has nothing todo with Cakewalk or Sonar, and it isn't duplicated, but one folder with two different paths in Windows.

You are safe to delete (or backup on an external drive) all installer files from Command Center\Downloads after installation. Or you keep some newer installers, so CCC doesn't have to download them again in case you want to rollback.

Thanks, I didn't know that.

yea, Ralf is correct, different paths but same thing.
Sorry for those of you who wish to complain about something
If your low on HD space or simply want space, just delete the installers after you install.
But remember if you wish to rollback, you'll want to keep  1 or 2 previous updates.

Odd.  The above is symlinkd, and "Default User" is junctioned to "C:\Users\Default", at least on my system.

Thanks for the info.

I take the whole CCC download folder and copy it to an external drive. I then delete the whole works. If I need to roll back I can just copy that version back to the download folder and run CCC.

I just copied the CCC download folder to a brand new machine and it installed everything I needed without downloading anything again. When everything was installed I deleted the contents of the CCC download folder.  If the install files are in the download folder and you tell CCC to install something it goes at it after it checks on line for latest versions. So this also saves time.
So bottom line is you only need to download once, keep copies on an external drive, and use those for back up or to install on a different computer. You don't need the files stored locally. It's actually turned out to be a most excellent system for those of us who use more than one computer.

Thank you very much, guys for your help :)
Now everything is clear.

Indeed I was tricked by GUI app showing disk usage and didn't look deep enough.

Nice to learn again something new from you, now also about Windows :)

I know what you mean. I have a similar app (Folder sizes) and sometimes it can trick you in to thinking there is more than 1 location.
