  • MASTER BOUNCE IS VERY MUDDY

Hi Guys!
After applying my final FX processing to my semi-final music trak and getting the sound I want, the final bounce comes out sounding un-processed by the processors on my mix bus and on my master bus.

The solo-ed traks are 1. The music trak, 2. The mix bus and, 3. the master bus.  All are routed to the Quad Capture and they sound great.  On the mix bus I have the Waves processors GW MixCentric and Abbey Road Vinyl.  On the Master bus I have NLS and PuigChild 670.

When I bounce to the final trak, the settings are: Source Category - Tracks, Channel Format - Stereo, Dithering - None.
There's no automation on any of the traks.  All FX processing is checked/accepted and I'm using Fast Bounce.

Tried many times for with no success.  Never happened before to me.  Any Suggestions from you?  Thank you!

Using source category "tracks" bypasses all buses so that makes total sense. You could use "buses" for instance and select the master bus.

Thanks, Sanderxpander.  What I'm understanding from your suggestion above is that for "source category" I could choose "busses" but I'm wondering how I specify the Master bus when I choose "busses"

It's weird that I get inconsistent results no matter what source category I choose.  That is, sometimes the sound comes through the FX processors beautifully when assigned to "tracks" and sometimes when assigned to "busses" but I can't count on consistent results from either one.  When I bounce, only the active track is soloed.  The bus and the Master are not soloed but are active, seen by the meter on each.

What am I doing wrong?  Thanks!

I think you must be mistaken about getting inconsistent results with consistent bounce settings. You will definitely not get bus FX when source is Tracks. You won't even get a mix of the selected tracks; you'll get one file per track with only the FX on each track.

Start by de-selecting everything (Ctrl+Shift+A), then bounce/export with source = Buses, and deselect all but the Master bus. So long as all your tracks and subbusses are outputting through the Master bus, that should give you exactly what your hear on live playback.

If you're bouncing the Master bus to another track within the project make sure the output of that track is direct to hardware Main Outs so it doesn't get "re-Mastered". You can then A/B the bounce against the live mix on the Master bus by grouping the mute buttons in opposition.

When I am exporting a finished mix I select the 'Entire Mix' from the Source Category and I have never had any problems.

Entire Mix is okay if you don't have any sends to additional hardware outputs (e.g. headphone outs, external meters/FX, etc.), but if you do, those signals will get summed in to the bounce/export.

And for that very reason I always use Main Outs

Thank you for your help, ALL of you!  I've created 7 published albums with Sonar and have never experienced this.
From past experience, it's probably something I'm overlooking.  However, the problem isn't solved yet so I'm including a LINK to a screenprint showing the Arranger AND the Console together so you can see my settings.

The problem now is that I'm getting clipped mixes when bouncing.  It does seem I'm hearing the correct FX processing but something is WAY over-driving the sound into clipping.
Thank you, again, for your ideas and help.

Set your Export Source Category to "Entire Mix".
And export.
