Maybe this has been covered before, but this is a new one for me. I am working in an existing project. I open it up in 2016.10 (I just updated it this morning) and there are no problems. When I insert a new soft synth (without any midi device connected) 32nd notes are recorded. For the most part they are C4.

Now, when I record midi into an older existing midi track it records fine, with no 32nd notes.

Also, if I record 2 new midi tracks at one time there are no problems. Only when one midi track is being recorded are there issues.

Also, why is Virtual Controller now an option for midi input? I have to select no midi inputs to get rid of it.

I though I was going to have a peaceful Sunday morning recording a few things banging in my head. Ha.

What soft synth have you inserted and what other soft synths do you have in the project?

I'm guessing you need to uncheck 'Enable MIDI Out' when inserting the synth or disable it after the fact by right-clicking the Synth tab in the browser. If you want to use the synth's MIDI Out capabilities, leave it enabled but be sure to set the input of each MIDI track in the project to a specific port and channel. If you have 'Always Echo Current MIDI Track' enabled in preferences (the default), and no specific port selected, SONAR will default the input to All Inputs - Omni when the track has focus.

Virtual Controller is a new feature to facilitate recording MIDI when a hardware controller isn't available (Vies > Virtual Controller Keyboard). It should be at the bottom of the list where it's easily ignored.

Brundlefly, thank you. You partially solved this issue. Enable MIDI Out was checked. It has never been checked before. Possibly, this happened with the 2016.10 update.

Still, the whole issue is not resolved. Virtual Controller, which is at the bottom of the MIDI in list, is always checked. This also causes these 32nd notes to appear. I have to select NONE and then select the Edirol FA-101 as the only MIDI in. This is a waste of time. I have been using Cakewalk since it came on floppies. Never had this problem before.

BTW, I am using multiple occurrences of Dim Pro as I am testing this. I have also tested it on SI Bass Guitar, Strum Session 2.1, BFD2, and Z3TA+ 2.

It gets more confusing, which usually means there is a simple answer out there. If I record a Dim Pro track without Enable MIDI checked and without the Virtual Controller checked nothing is recorded. Good. But, I like to view the staff, and now even though nothing is actually being recorded the 32nd notes are appearing in staff view. They disappear after I stop the recording. Any thoughts on that?

I've not heard of this issue with 32nd notes coming from Virtual Controller, but I think this might be related to an issue that SONAR has on systems that have fewer than two hardware MIDI inputs/drivers. If you don't have another physical MIDI port you can enabled, you might need to add a virtual MIDI cable like the free LoopBE1 that adds drivers to Windows rather than working completely within SONAR like Virtual MIDI Controller.

The 'false positive' confidence recording indication in the PRV and Staff View is 'normal' in that everyone experiences it. An armed MIDI track will register incoming MIDI from any port during recording even though the Input assignment doesn't match. You just have to ignore the indication in those views. If notes aren't shown in the Track View, nothing is being recorded.

Can I get rid of Virtual Controller at the MIDI input? That is what's causing my problem.

I find this interesting: if I choose no MIDI input I get the 32nd notes recorded. And, this is with no external midi device connected with Enable MIDI output NOT checked. Also, the moment I hit the red record button for that synth it automatically checks (engages) the FA-101 MIDI in and the Virtual Controller. In all my years of using this software, this has never happened.

Does this happen if you insert a soft synth and not choose the "use simple instrument " option. Then insert a fresh midi track to record to?  In other words Do not use the instrument track option. Use a stand alone midi track to drive the synth.

I am going to use the problem reporter soon.  Here is my thread and video:
