I'm one of those for whom the "M" key would not insert a new marker following the new update. After some experimentation, I believe I've found a solution (not the cause of the problem, but a solution). This will be long, so bear with me.
I have an existing file of custom key bindings that I've created over the years, so simply rolling back to the default bindings isn't a very attractive option. (Using the defaults, however, as mentioned in a previous post, does restore the function of the M key.) Placing markers quickly with a keystroke is a great time-saver for me.
I discovered that the M key was still working on my laptop (which has yet to be updated), so I copied the key bindings file from there to my desktop. Voila! the M key inserted a new marker.
I was a happy camper until I discovered that as soon as I closed a file and opened a new one, the M key no longer functioned properly.
So, here's what I discovered: the key binding problem appears to be related to the new Lens function. I reinstalled the custom binding file, verified that it was working and then saved the lens. That appears to have resolved the issue. The M key now inserts a new marker at the Now time and keeps working when files are opened and closed. Curiously enough, the M key function continues to work regardless of which Lens I'm using, including one I've customized.
Hope this helps those of you having this issue.
