Oh well, at least the 15 minutes I spent creating a project and working with the SS to see if there was something that would allow entering precise numbers wasn't entirely wasted...I never knew it talked to the event list. I can actually think of several ways this could be useful.

i do appreciate it, but it to be honest, its a very light-weight step sequencer.  Compare it to B-step and you will see.  thanks for checking though.  Happy New Year.

Step Sequencer is another composition tool that's long overdue an update.

I wish it would allow several of it's rhythm strips to be open at once, instead of just one.

The internal SS was a thorn in my side for a long time, and I ended up getting Geist in response. FXpansion runs some pretty hefty sales on products, so waiting for a Geist 2 sale would be something to consider. Definitely take advantage of the 10-day trial first! Geist (2) is way more than a step sequencer, but the SS functionality is by far the most obvious.

What key feature does Giest have that SS would benefit from?

Geist's primary purpose is as a SS, so it was not a complementary component for me, but a replacement. Deep down Geist is more what I would consider an EDM DAW, with 8 audio engines, FX banks, sample/slicing/layering capabilities, and the ability to sample audio internally (via its "Spitter" plugin).

On the surface, step sequencer is its most obvious use, but it is far more than that... All engines/patterns can be fired off real-time with MIDI if you want to delve to that level of detail.

So the SS is just a little more intuitive, but no extra functionality.

Pretty much. The SS portion is what comes up when it first loads (the pattern tab/page). Even with that you can duplicate patterns to modify one rather than creating another from scratch (up to 24 per engine), then fire them off via MIDI or construct them together on the song tab/page.

The underlying MIDI is very complex, e.g. each engine has its own channel to fire individual pads or patterns, etc. Internally this specific functionality is slick, but using MIDI thru to fire off another VSTi can get painful. It is easier to just use Spitter and sample/slice the other VSTi you wish to fire in most cases, i.e. create a Geist kit from recording samples from the other.

but THIS has A LOT more functionality!

That thing hurt my brain. I really like the step sequencer pretty much how it is, just some added further flexibility and functionality would be good for me. I particularly like the way you can convert between piano and SS for further editing.
