I've selected some midi data on a track and want to apply a MIDI effect, but the whole menu is greyed out. Anyone know why this is happening?

do you have data in the midi track..and what kind of effects are you trying?

Yes there is a bass line. The whole menu is greyed out... I can't access any audio or MIDI effects.

I don't think it's possible to Process>apply FX to MIDI data, because MIDI is just data. You can add FX events in the data stream, but they can not be applied in the way you mean. That data can be removed from the Event list at will, whereas applied FX in the audio are permanent. Maybe I don't know MIDI protocol enough, but my intuition says MIDI FX just don't work that way.

And anyway...IMO, destructive editing, like Process>Apply is never a good idea.
The recommendable way of adding FX to soft synth is putting them on the audio output track.

in a way you can process midi fx by bouncing to clips with the midi fx in the clips bin.

leealecbarrie, can you provide a step by step? You are generally describing the problem but I want to make sure I can duplicate your steps and see what the issue may be. From what you have described it may be that you are selecting from the timeline and expecting to apply the fx but if the track is not selected, that may not work.

To use process/apply effect/midi effects you must have the midi track selected and have previously inserted a midi effect.

Exactly. What this feature does is render any MFX in the FX bin to the actualy MIDI clip(s). But to do this you must have a MIDI effect in that track's FX bin or that clip's FX bin.

If you just want to load some MIDI FX on that track, start in the Browser and drag n drop some MFX to said track.

Thanks, everyone for your responses. I'll try the drag and drop, but..... as it turned out, I simply had to right-clck on the selected MIDI data and the MIDI Effects menu appeared as a popup menu window. From there, I could choose the effect I wanted. In this case, I wanted to use the Humanize effect from Frank's MIDI Plugins to make my entire MIDI bass track sound more lifelike. My confusion was due to the differences in how Sonar XI works from Sonar 8.5.

Glad you got it worked out.
