I am presently running Sonar X3 in Windows 7. No problem encountered.
However, I am thinking of upgrading my computer to the latest version which would be Windows 10.
Is Sonar X3 compatible, as would be any cakewalk software I am presently using, with Windows 10 or would I have to purchase
a whole new set of software?

Thanks for your replies.

check out some of the posts in the Google search below.
Some people have no problems Win 10 and X3.
You may have some problems with Rapture,Z3ta2,CA2A plugins from X3.
Not sure if you can get the fixed versions of the plugins with X3.

I use Win 8.1. In fact, I have just done my annual OS reformat with a new 8.1 system. I did try Win 10. It's ok. But the downside was the update process. Windows 10 takes over your computer with it's updating process whereas 8.1 means you can update when you want (or not at all!). I have never had any trouble with Win 8.1. I will never go back to Windows 10 - I view it as a massive spying OS.

MS development is for Win10.  If your audio card has Win10 drivers, not sure why you'd go with Win 8 at this point.

You can't even buy Windows 8.1. Well there might be a few disks still on bottom shelves somewhere. I have the disk and I can use it again and again,,,,but,,, you have to authorize it once installed and that is ( Last time I checked) the same price as Windows 10.

Windows 10 is still free for those who use assistive technologies.. cough,,, cough,,

So it's a no brainier. They were super helpfull when I used Chat to authorize a Windows 7 desktop. They used the W7 serial number I read off the side of the case.

The download installer seems to hang at 99%. Hundereds of posts about it with no easy solution. so-
Best to download the ISO image of Windows 10 and burn it to a DVD.  The ISO copy containes both the Home and Pro version. So depends on which version of W7 you have.

You don't mention your audio hardware.
Make sure your hardware has drivers for Win 10 or win 8.1.

I'd say if you plan to stick with X3, and Windows 7 is stable, why rock the boat?  Windows 7 is supported until 2020 with security updates.  The downside of that is there will be no more X3 updates or fixes (X3 is end of life), or support (other than the forum).

But the best bet would be to jump on Platinum lifetime updates before Dec 31st.  That way you can have a supported Sonar version for any Windows version that you choose now, or any that come down the chute in the future!
