This is definitely one of the more frustrating things I've dealt with lately

Last night I tried to log into the Microsoft store during my unlimited time...

It tells me I'm not connected to the Internet and the icon in the tray says the same... Yet I can browse anywhere and even log into the online store.

I've been searching all the online help I can find including microsoft's own, but none of the items fixed anything and some of them seem to be unreachable... MS online help is all 8.1!

I've noticed the inconsistency many times before but gave it no notice as everything else worked fine except for logging into the windows store from the tile on the start screen...

It works fine from my friend's house who was the original owner of the laptop. His house was where it failed to install at the restart point...

The most recent thing I'm trying though I'm not really believing it is specific to my connecting point, is trust this PC... It doesn't appear in the locations the online solutions claim...

Bewildered...

This is all so hard compounded with my lack of electricity (only generator for a few hours/day), my own web connection, lack of money to do anything...

It has to be something stupid simple that I'm overlooking... Why on this connect and not the other? Connect signal is good and my other pc's are all properly web connected but win7Pro and Vista64...XP, and Mac OS I believe Lion.... Oh, and two iPads as well as an iPod touch?

Thanks... I just powered down the laptop as it is down to 64% and I can't recharge until 8pm tonight... I'm on the iPad at this moment...

Thanks for tolerating my frustration...

Tried again today...

All updates have been installed...

Update assistant says all us ready except for a Bluetooth driver that should be re-installed after the update...

Install failed the same way... Download, backup, install, restart, some processing, then the machine shuts down. Starting it again makes the machine revert back to 8....

Sad...

Hmmm... I'm still on 8.0 and each time I get a message to upgrade to 8.1 I click the "remind me later" button.

Reading this does not fill me with confidence

Yeah... I know what you mean..

I was amazed at the large number of people encountering the same common problems/results.

I used their own (Microsoft) program to establish compatibility, downloaded every update available for 8.0 and it still fails... And I notice that during the beginning of the install it performs tests for compatibility there as well!

I'm really tired from this current method/path they're following... 7 hours to download the update twice and having it fail both times... For a point update! It's not even a full version...

I seem to be battling with issues on a couple of machines right now. Thankfully my DAW is running fine if you allow for the fact that both DVD drives are dead...

I would post your specific 8.1 upgrade problems on the Windows 8 forum.  Someone there should be able to get it resolved.

The last time I checked, Microsoft was still offering free support for problems with Automatic Updates. It would probably be worth a try to contact them, if you are unable to work it out yourself.

I see some suggestions on your Win8 forum post.
