For those who might be thinking about getting a new DAW and want a great unit, with great service, and knowledgeable, prompt support, I would strongly recommend checking out www.studiocat.com.  Jim Roseberry was simply outstanding in his support both before and after the sale (I did not really need much help afterwards as the system performs flawlessly, but I did have a question about which resolutions the graphics processor would support as I was considering upgrading monitors and Jim responded quickly).

As for my system, I ordered the Pro Studio DAW series as follows:
  •   - Case: Deluxe Silent Tower
      - Power-Supply: 750w quiet
      - Haswell CPU: 4790k @ 4.4GHz (8 threads)
      - RAM: 32GB DDR3/1600
      - OS drive: 250GB SSD
      - Audio drive: 2TB HD
      - Samples drive 1: 500GB SSD
      - Burner: 24x DVD/RW
      - Video: HD4600
      - Operating System: Windows 8 x64
It is a smoking fast system, perfectly stable and so silent I had to put my ear up to it to hear it and even then could not really hear a thing - its that quiet!  Jim even took care of installing my core DAW (Sonar Platinum).  I only had to install sound card drivers (Roland Octa-Capture) which only took a few minutes and I was up and running (yes I had many plugins and VSTi's to install as well).  Turnaround time was fast as well.  About a week from order to receipt and that included burn in testing.  Oh, the system was beautifully built and packed extremely well.  I've had it for a little under 2 months and it has operated flawlessly and I've not come close to pushing it performance wise.

Bottom line, while I'm sure I now have a system that will serve me well for years and years, when I need a new one, I will go back to Jim and Studiocat again without hesitation.

I'd also like to give a big thankyou to Dell. Almost 4 years now and I still haven't used all the CPU on my i7 with 16gb memory. Sonar works perfect with dirt cheap off the shelf PC's and I suspect works just as fast... Oh I did replace a few of the fans however was a tad noisy.. I love my Dell and it's good for porno as well..

I'm interested in what internal tweaks he makes to systems before shipping them out so they are 100% audio ready.

Glad you like the new DAW, Eric!

The advantage of a custom machine is just that (custom):
You have complete control over exactly what's installed... and exactly how it's configured (top to bottom).

ie: Many off-the-shelf systems have motherboards with minimal settings (to ensure novice users don't foul up their machines). There are certain parameters in the BIOS that affect DPC Latency.
If those parameters aren't exposed in the BIOS, you have no means of tweaking them.
IOW, You won't be able to achieve the lowest possible (most consistent) DPC Latency.
There are also parameters that affect CPU speed (throttling).  If those parameters aren't exposed, you can't tweak them.
The more you push the performance envelope (especially at ultra low latency), the more significant things like this become.

In any scenario (racing, computers, etc) where you're looking for absolute top performance, you're working with custom solutions. You build exactly what's needed... and configure it for maximum performance for that particular application (nothing more and nothing less).

A computer is like any other piece of music gear.
Some folks are happy playing Squier/Epiphone guitars.
Some folks want to play American made models.
Other folks prefer higher-end instruments like Fender/Gibson Custom Shop or PRS.

I'm (of course) biased , but I would liken our machines to PRS guitars.
You don't need to swap out the bridge/tuners/pickups, file the nut, or level frets to have a top-notch guitar.
When it arrives, you make minute adjustments to the action... and you're ready to go.
Does everyone want/need a PRS?  No
For some folks, the attention to detail and performance are worth it.

Although not a StudioCat owner, I did have Jim consult on my build. It was well worth the minimal cost IMO.
