It gets confusing trying to remember what instrument is plugged into inputs 5/6 and 7/8.

There should be an option to rename the inputs, so when we want to select a new input we could instantly know where the keyboard is, and inputs are the microphones or guitars, etc.

Right now the input select is 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 , Dig1, all this stuff often gets confusing trying to remember which is on 3/4.

Go here

Check "Use friendly names to represent audio drivers"
Double-click the name in the 'Friendly Name' column and make them whatever you wish to see.

The down side is that you're stuck with stereo pairs on the input.

My "solution" to the stereo issue is to name the input something like "Bass DI/Guitar DI", so I can see fairly quickly and easily that the Bass DI is the left channel, the Guitar DI the right.

Thanks that info really helped!

So you said you need to name both the left and right channels on a stereo channel?

Yes, and then eyeball the name. Not perfect, but not the end of the world.
