Is there any way I can get the default position in recording preferences to be set to 'SOUND ON SOUND' as opposed to Comping?

Set up a Project Template. this way it will be just like a regular "New project with the exception of your Sound on sound being the default.

Thank you, my friend for the advice. I still question why the Bakers feel that the default position should be 'Comping'.

Really? I would wager that it's much more common to record multiple takes of the same part than to layer different parts on the same track. I would make the same call on the default.

No problem.
TBH, this isn't such a big deal really. I use Project templates every project I create.
If you haven't used them, you don't know what your missing. Set up time takes a lot of time.
If you are using templates, Simply re save them after making the change to SOS in preferences.

My default is Overwrite. I wouldn't have even known about this  change because...
I use Templates

How do you know it's much more common? I have been a Cakewalk user from the early days and have never used comping once.

Im not trying to take sides here, but he's right.
Comping and the improvements that were just done to enhance take lanes is by far the number one recording mode in the industry (Not just Sonar either).

I choose to do my takes a little differently.
Im not a big fan of needling things to death, so I'm like you. I do track by track in "over-write" mode.
My takes are on separate tracks and I don't do many as I believe it kills the realism and authenticity of music as we know it. In other words, I don't believe in making every little thing perfect, the mistakes are where the magic happens.

But as far as take lanes go, you and I are a dying bread. Everyone uses them and I would have to say its probably a 80% to 20% who are not.

That Dave guy is a little rough around the edges . But he is probably one of the more helpful, smartest people you will talk to in these forums. He has helped me above and beyond. In other words, He's a good guy.

Sorry for the inconvenience in recording modes but like I said, set up a project template.
Here's a video I made a couple years back on project templates, I hope it helps.

And here you can get an idea about what "Comping" has to offer

However be aware that some of the shortcuts and features have changed.

Well to be fair, comping didn't exist in the early days. Back then, you recorded a take and if it wasn't perfect but had pieces that might be worth keeping none the less, you muted it and created another track and recorded another take.

Unless you were recording digital drum parts. Then you tended to use sound on sound to build a drum part. And while I suppose one could use sound on sound to build other parts. A piano track for instance. Creating piano parts via sound on sound is definitely not my normal work flow and I don't think I'm unusual in that respect.

To make non-frequent long-time users and returning users aware of the new feature.
The same applies to the Tungsten theme introduced early this year, which is now the default theme.
I prefer overwriting recording mode and Mercury btw.

I'm sort of halfway between everyone...

Like Chuck, i prefer to have as continuous a take as possible - I'm not a Mariah Carey who comps individual syllables. If a fix is needed, more and more I just do a punch, so overwrite works for me.

Also remember you can right-click on the Record button, and then you're just one click away from choosing the mode.
