Hi all!  Because of this forum i was told about the home studio sale and i just touched the surface and really glad i did. I love the help module and feeling good about this product.

2 questions:
1. i am a music teacher and teach a class on audio and was wondering if i bought home studio for 2 pc's (down the road 3 pc's) would I need to buy the software 3 separate times? we also have 1 mac, fyi.

2. will home studio be a good training ground if i decide to go to sonar plat?

all of you made feel welcome even the I am a "newbie" with this stuff!  I will try not to seem to "needy"
thanks, jj

You can install SONAR on multiple computers as long as you only use one copy at a time. If you purchase multiple licenses, then you can use it simultaneously on multiple computers.

Yes, Home Studio is a good way to start learning SONAR since it is a scaled-down version of Platinum. Home Studio is the entry-level version and from there the order goes Artist, Professional, Platinum. All other editions of SONAR are scaled-down versions of Platinum.

You can install multiple versions of Sonar as long as you are the only one using it.
Here is the policy on educational use.

Even though I have the full version I bought HS because the price was right for what I needed it for.
It is pretty much the same as the main versions without the fluff.
It would certainly be perfect for teaching as it is simple and uncluttered.
It's biggest weakness is the SI drums which are IMHO, useless. I am going to put in a plea that they at least have a few options on the sounds.  TTS_1 sounds better to me and that's not saying much.

I'm not sure Home Studio or even Artist applies to Academic usage but it would be good to ask Cakewalk:

Cakewalk's specially priced SONAR Platinum and Professional academic editions require eligibility verification.

And the usage is a bit odd to me as well:

PRODUCT USAGE RESTRICTIONS:
  • Users may purchase only one license of each academically discounted product every 90 days
  • Licenses may be used only on privately owned computers
  • Users may not resell academic products, license ownership is non-transferable

In a class setting you may want to use it on several school owned computers for student use. Not sure I'd want to buy my own computers for this. But then HS is cheap enough not to worry about all that.

well..it's the music dept. which is what i run and it's semi private school.
i am sure cakewalk would not mind taking money..i would buy 3 licenses for 3 computers and just pay 45.00 for the asking price.

thanks to all!

For software licensing in general, an academic license is usually marketed to individual students.

For a business or institution to license software for it's computers, a commercial multi-seat license is typically what is needed.  For example, the Microsoft Office volume licensing purchased by the employer for each device at the office.

In this case, buying 3 full licenses for 3 computers seems perfectly legit.

Well, I'm sure that Cakewalk would really enjoy expanding into the educational market!

Perhaps you are the gateway to the future of music education via Cakewalk!

Thanks abacab , John,  for the link. I have Session Drummer and AD 2 via owning full versions of Sonar. But it's nice to try new drums sets and for that price it's tempting. What I like about Session drummer is you can load your own samples, so I will look into this AIR drum set for sure. Also nice to have a solution for people who only own HS. Even Sonar Artist is left without good drums. Drums are what make or break a convincing ITB recording.
DAW software leans heavily towards non traditional sounds these days. All I ask for is a drum kit that sounds like a normal bar bands drum kit. Let get some duct tape on those heads eh! Forget the fancy pants 30 piece kit....
