  • So if Cakewalk (or Anderton) were to do some videos, what would you want to see?

Creating a new thread based on this post from Craig.

I am thinking that there might be two categories.  One is a basic set of tutorials that introduce the UI (kinda like the old Skylight video done for X1) and how it is used to do basic functions in Sonar (i.e. record and audio track, etc.)  It could possibly be based on the tutorials included with Sonar.

The other category might be more in depth features or new features (some have been done as part of the weekly tips ad those were cool).

So what do you want to see in the realm of videos?

Considering how many "starter" questions come to the sonar forum I think a basic starter video about how to record audio, then midi, simple mix of a couple of tracks.  This should be their "starter" and set the series up using and adding to the exact same project.  So a novice could come in, find out how to get started and then come back to look at a section using the ProChannel, or something simple like renaming clips.  The videos would need a "tree branch" organization, which, trust me, isn't at all easy to organize so that it makes sense but is easier to do in computer form (w/ search) than a clumsy book.

Every time I want to figure a tool or technique out I'd love a visual "how to" by someone that knows how to do it and have them do it very slowly like I stupid.

Agreed.   Many folks like me need the visual/auditory cues to understand things fully.   I think CakeTV should start churning out a few more on the website (Craig's plate is probably pretty full these days.)

Salud!

Good Day,
As Dave suggests and perhaps links from within help documentation to instructional or example video's, at least for more major categories of help, (e.g., Audio Snap). I find a lot of the help documentation is somewhat limited to showing a certain feature is available and/or keystrokes to apply/invoke features, but may lack the context of when's or why's it is used and possible results, pro's, con's, perhaps through graphical/animated examples.
Im thinking also some updating and new content to Cakewalk TV/University video's is needed.

What would be nice, as I believe Dave is also suggesting is a complete/official Sonar walk-through course of a small project with both audio/midi content, (with why's, when's and how's) going from, preferences settings, track organization, level setups and recording, mixing and applying various plug-ins, gain, automation, etc., to importing to final stereo/surround track, and possibly a mastering series.

An interactive (live) online course with Craig Anderton, and/or other instructors is something Id definitely be willing to pay for, at a reasonable cost.

That being said I guess there are some Cakewalk and or 3rd-party video courses (e.g., Craig Anderton's new book), and other educational stuff out there on Sonar use that can be purchased, although most also need updating, and/or through online services such as Groove-3.

Cheers

cheerleaders ...

If that's not an option, then as mentioned above, complete walkthroughs on workflow options.  Most of my frustration comes from starting down a path expecting (assuming) things to work a certain way, then realizing they don't.

Once the alternative is discovered things are OK again, but it would be best to not get frustrated to begin with.

Dave,
This is a GREAT idea for a thread.  I would love to see videos of new features.  I know that they're there, but quite honestly I have no idea of what they are or how to use them.

Good move - literally.  I'm sure Craig and Cakewalk are about to be inundated by suggestions which would have overwhelmed the previous thread.

yes, agreed, plus this (new users) is also the target market

It is time for a new song, with newer functionality, that can serve as a learning project.

And every video, for at least 6 months to a year, uses that same project.

Love it!

I suppose video versions of a few select topics such as those covered in "The Big Book", or entirely new ones, that would benefit from a video walk through.

As a new Platinum user since August, making the jump from X3, I am still catching up on the all of the goodies added to Sonar since X3

That said, the Cakewalk web pages dedicated to the rolling updates, with the release notes for each update, plus the eZines have a lot of information packed into a small space.  I have been approaching these on a "need to know" basis because it takes some time to sift through them.  I have already learned a few new tricks!
https://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Rolling-Updates#start

But these rolling update notes may also provide a good starting point for a video series on Platinum, that shows real world usage for how to make the most of the new features.  There are already a few video clips in there, though certainly not enough, so this would be where I would start looking for ideas for Craig.

It would also be cool to see a complete song creation from beginning to end!!!
