  • So if Cakewalk (or Anderton) were to do some videos, what would you want to see? (p.2)

what about a monthly release video covering the same stuff as the e-zine, or at least the new/changed stuff?

Step 1. Compile a list members of this forum who have less than 100 posts.
Step 2. Compile a list of threads on this forum created by anyone on the member list from step 1.
Step 3. Comb through those threads and you will discover exactly what new users struggle with the most. Any effort put into making tutorial/help videos should thoroughly and completely address each and every new user struggle revealed in those threads before any consideration is given to videos on more advanced topics.

 This is a brilliant idea.

Hi. I would like as mentioned above, to see videos for both basic, and advanced features. I do not have any specific requests.
I suppose that the most valued videos would be for those new to SONAR.
As mentioned by abacab, the Rolling updates page is also a "hidden gem" for many.
As is CakeTV.
All the best.

I completely agree with your point, but that really is a suggestion for what Cakewalk could be doing for new users in general, not how to best use the time Craig has so graciously volunteered to give!

Realizing that Dave mentioned a basic set of tutorials in the first part of this thread, that could easily be produced by Cakewalk without Craig's help.

I really think Dave's second category would be more relevant to how Craig could spend the limited time he has available to make videos that would benefit the broadest group of users.  I think the broad scope would be inclusive of all levels of experience with Sonar, or DAWs in general, not just the newbies.  Even the newbies would be inspired to grow into the new techniques.

Not discounting the needs of new users, but do we really want to spend Craig's knowledge and experience teaching new users how to setup Sonar, or an audio interface to record a track?  In my opinion there are already numerous free resources available for that, and this forum, plus commercial training video series such as the pay by the month plan at Groove3.

I think that Craig should be teaching music production at the PhD level, not Kindergarten

You make a very fair point and I completely understand where you're coming from. I think an argument could be made that insuring a steady stream of adoption by new users is critically important to the long term success (and therefore support) of the product. And its not secret that new users often struggle to learn the platform. This continues to happen in spite of all the new user tutorials, videos and other resources already out there.

So on one hand it would indeed seem to be a waste to use Craig's PhD level talent to teach such Kindergarten level subject matter. On the other hand, lots of other people have tried to create resources aimed at helping new users and yet, the problem still exists and new users continue to struggle and leave the platform to pursue other options because its too hard for them to learn. Which tells me that it may not be a bad idea to utilize PhD level talent on the problem whether that be Craig or someone else.

The point is, many here seem to want to completely discount or otherwise disregard the issue of new users struggling to learn (and ultimately leaving) the platform. Left unchecked, sooner or later that issue could end up biting all of us in the butt.

Your point about new users is valid, I just don't see placing that monkey on Craig's back.  What he does on these forums is in his personal capacity.

For one, Cakewalk really needs to beef up the getting started tutorials in the User Manual.  There is much room for improvement there.

There are some Cakewalk knowledge base articles that you will get steered towards if you ask questions on the forum. "How do I  optimize Sonar or my PC for audio", "do I need a real audio interface?", "I'm getting crackling, static, or dropouts in my audio, what should I do?" may be among the most common questions I have seen on the forum.

Getting started with Sonar is definitely not a smooth process, with a start to finish table of contents to map the way.  It's scattered about in many pieces.  Some things are in the manual, some techniques are on YouTube, some new feature info appears in the monthly eZine. Check the Sonar Power book, forum threads,  Knowledge Base,  Google searches ... sigh ... I keep noticing this every time I try to find a helpful reference to quote with an answer I give to a question on the forum...

Probably the closest thing to a real handbook is the Sonar Power book series.  I have purchased most of them over the years.  Highly recommended!
