  • Step Sequencer - Extending A Pattern - Can You Do It?

Hello,

So I usually start out with a 4 or 8 beat step sequencer to get the basic kick/snare/hat beat going.  I then want to make a 16-beat (4 bar sequence), but when I add the beats, it doesn't copy what I already have.  Is there a way to add more beats and copy what I have in the first beat (bar) to the rest?

Thank You!

I am not sure I understand your workflow.

What I have done in the past with Step Sequencer is make a pattern (1 bar or 2 bar, etc.) and then copy and paste it throughout the song.

Alternatively, I think you can convert it to a groove clip and drag it out to lengthen it, but I haven't done that.

you can right click on the clip/ choose to turn it into midi then treat it like any other midi clip, groove clip it, copy/paste it, exc.

Easiest way to do that is to simply stretch the clip.

I use the step sequencer to create click tracks in lieu of the metronome, making a 4- or 8-note sequence and then dragging it out to the estimated song length. The same technique would work to make sequences of any length.

The step sequence patterns are already inherently groove clips, once it's made all you have to do is stretch it out for as long as you want.

I'm assuming what SMB means is not simply to lengthen the pattern but to turn a 2 bar loop into a 4 bar loop. In that case I would stretch the 2 bar loop to a 4 bar one and then "bounce to clip".

Assuming I understand correctly...say you've created a 2-bar sequence in the step sequencer and want to extend it to 4 bars in the step sequencer, with the second 2 bars being automatically copied from the first 2 bars...right? Then this "xpands" on what Sanderxpander said:

1. Go to Track view and drag the MIDI file to the right to add 2 more bars.
2. Right-click on it and choose Bounce to Clip.
3. Right-click and choose Convert MIDI Clip to Step Sequencer.

Now when you double-click on the clip to open the step sequencer, you'll have your 4 bars with the last 2 duplicating the first 2.

Thank you everyone.   This makes sense.  I was just wondering if there was a way to do it all in the step sequencer only.

There is, but it's not as fast. Trust me on this one

Here is the problem that i dont believe was answered here:

I want to replicate the notes I have in the red box for all 16 steps I have programmed already.

I want to copy and paste that going forward into the step sequencer (replacing all those notes that have straight 100 velocities).

But the problem is my other drum hits vary through the pattern, so I cant simply bounce the midi to a clip and drag it out.  I just want to take 1 or 2 bars for note 55 only and repeat it INSIDE the step sequencer.

Thank you!
