I'm sure this has been beat to death and I'm not positive I'm in the right for him but how do I minimize the latency recording into sonar from my Roland V 700 system? I have asio drivers set to zero, and I still hear a slap back.

I must be doing something funky? I do have a universal audio reverb while tracking but it doesn't print.

You use direct monitoring while tracking. In other words you listen to the direct sound from he mike mixed in with playback from the computer. Don't listen to what you are recording from the computer output. Using input echo to monitor a track after it has passed through all that conversion and processing will always result in some form of latency. Only brands like RME will get you closer to low latency monitoring of the back end.

Sonar has automatic PDC (plugin delay compensation).
If you've got a latent plugin inserted *anywhere* in the project, all other audio will be delayed by that amount to maintain sample-accurate sync.  Due to the nature of the audio being sent to the UAD2 card... and then back to the DAW, there is latency using the UA plugins.
 
You've got a couple of options to work around this issue:

• Avoid using latent plugins while tracking
• In the Control Bar, there's an option to disable PDC (use this to disable Automatic PDC while tracking)

Steve...what do you mean by 'slap back'?
Do you hear double notes....or you hear the played note too late (delayed)

If it's double notes you're hearing then you've probably got direct mixing on the VS700 AND input echo in Sonar enabled at the same time.

If it's only delayed notes you're hearing....then Jim's advice to disable PDC will give you immediate info if it's 'just' plug in related or if your system is at fault.

The VS700 should be able to work with low enough latency for live tracking through Sonar as long as there are not too many CPU intensive plugins in your project.

No need to track vocals dry.   
 
If you disable automatic PDC when tracking, there will still be latency on the reverb.
However, it'll just add a few ms to the Pre-Delay of the reverb.
With automatic PDC disabled, the dry vocal track you're recording will not be delayed (latent).
 
You can mix both hardware and software based monitoring, but you have to be careful.
If you do this, you want to monitor the dry vocal track straight off the audio interface (hardware base monitoring)... and monitor the reverb return via software monitoring.  
Just make sure you're not also monitoring the dry vocal track via software.
That'll be a few ms later... and will thus cause phase/comb-filter issues.

As above with the latency.  Direct monitoring and disable the plugs (Control E I think) should work.
 
And yes, the ISA should sound ... if not better, a little thicker and round with more gain than the Roland pres (which are fine).  I find transformer-coupled pres etc. give more separation of sounds when you drive elements harder.  And more gain gives you more mic positions and distance (so save some money for room treatment!).

Thanks so much everybody. The PDC seemed to do the trick. I just put a little Sonitus verb in there turn the dry setting all the way down and it's fine.
As to the focusrite ISA my buddy, a real engineer, brought over his ADK? Preamp with the Lundahl (?) Transformer and I could hear a difference, nice and clean and transparent. He told me it was the same Transformer in the focusrite ISA so I bought one. I figure if I can hear the difference it must be real. My hearing is right between Pete Townshend and Beethoven.

PS a follow-up... Now that the latency has been addressed via PDC should I now go back into the ASIO-drivers and raise the buffer setting above 0 just for safety sake?
