...it actually opened! All the audio and track names were intact, and I was pulling from a no-name, eraseable CD-RW I bought for the cheapest price possible at a German consumer electronics store. So that was also encouraging.
 
Anyway, I realize this is not earth-shaking news but it might give some comfort to those who have a bunch of ancient OMF projects sitting around, and are afraid of not being able to open them.

Did you open the file just for the heck of it or did you have a specific reason?

Also good considering CDs are advertised to have a 10 yr average data retention shelf life, depending on storage conditions. Keeping them away from Tesla coils and super dynamic flux capacitors may extend their life.

I had an unlabeled CD-RW sitting around and wasn't sure what was on it. So I opened it, and saw it was an old OMF file that I had saved from Pro Tools back in 2003 so I could bring it into SONAR. I never labeled it because it was just a transfer medium; the project that ended up getting mixed in SONAR was the final product.
 
This may be the most boring thread I've ever posted, but it was cool to bring up an ancient Pro Tools project and have it show up in Splat, all dressed up and ready to go...over 13 years later.

I often find old files from ten years ago or more that I open in SPlat to see what it is. Most often, it is some drivel I thought might be a good idea for a song. But, sometimes, there is something worth retrieving. Regardless, the fact that SPlat can still read the files and play 'em is a big tick for  backwards compatibility. Also, it is interesting to hear what you thought was a good recording back then in comparison with what you can do now. Ah, the magic of 20/20 hindsight.      

I've got some 20 yr old floppies I need to check...

Craig, you are a lot luckier that I am!  I had some no-name CDs die in six months.  I tossed the rest of them out.  No more no-name CDs or DVDs for me!
