Been upgrading my studio lately, and a new DAW desk gave me more space to play with. Still not enough space for dual monitors but I do have the real estate to upgrade my 22" monitor to a 27". My current 22" is a ViewSonic bought back in '08. I know video is no big deal for us audio folks, but are there any affordable video monitor suggestions from my fellow Sonartists?

I'd keep an eye out on NewEgg for specials.

Matter of fact NewEgg just emailed me about an LG 29" for $229 and an Asus 27" for $159.  Either one of those would probably be good.

So ASUS makes good monitors then? I'm only familiar with their motherboards and budget laptops. 
LG (as well as Samsung) makes TVs too, so I would lean more towards them.
 

I don't have any experience with their monitors to say for certain.  You could read reviews to see if anybody is reporting dead pixels or DOAs.

Coincidentally, just as Elson posted this one of my video monitors gave up the ghost.
 
I'd had it for 10 years, so I guess I'd gotten my money's worth. But I needed a quick replacement, so I pedaled on down to Best Buy to pick something up.
 
I'd been using two 20" monitors, which are just the right size to fit between the speakers without impinging on line-of-sight to the speakers. But nobody sells 20" monitors anymore, except online. So I had no choice but to go with the smallest monitor in the store, 22".
 
Knowing I'd have to upsize, I considered going with a single large monitor instead. But a 32" monitor would have given me less screen space than 2x20" and would cost $600-800 vs $100. So I now have a 22" and a 20" monitor, and they no longer fit as comfortably between the speakers.
 
I believe this may be the solution:



$39 at Fry's. This will let me position the two monitors vertically. When I can afford it, I'll then be able to get a larger monitor and it won't interfere with my speakers. 
 
Oh, the display I bought was from AOC. I've had a previous monitor from this manufacturer and it died after less than a year. But it was only a hundred bucks, and it's crisp and bright. I later found it at Wal-Mart for 10 bucks less. 
 

I have a 22 and a 19 (or 20ish) and have also been looking for some sort of upgrade.
 
Keep in mind that going from 22" to 27" you don't really gain much vertically. They just make them wider. For me, I don't really need extra width as much as more vertical along with the width. I recently bought a 27" Acer ($149) and returned it. Mainly because of clarity (mainly text). Apparently 27" at 1920x1080 is right on the border of being workable (clarity). I'm not sure if that was because the Acer was a cheaper model or not.
 
Well, after re-reading your post, if you use a single monitor then I guess extra width would be much more needed.
