Well, I gave in and bought it!
LOL.. I feel both like a very logical and sensible person AND like a kid just looking for the largest collection of toys to put on a shelf to gather dust...!
I'll still be using Sonar as my main DAW, but my workflow will change a lot. Volume and pan automation will somehow be stored in midi files... ( I dunno... like using MIDI faders like VCAs for pan and volume of my audio tracks... thinking aloud here... I'll have to save multiple 16 tracks midi files to store complete projects i suppose... i'll see as I go along.) In hopes that 80% of the mix will be stored there. As for FX chains, I'm gonna use digigrid (waves) soon... so the Fx chains will be stored using that cross-daw system.
PROS:
- for me, the price just to get Spectral Layers alone was worth it! I do not care that much about included plugins and instruments (Already own Waves bundles and Komplete instruments, so...)
- Now have a backup DAW, if Sonar should ever give up on me anytime soon
- Since I also liked Vegas pro 9 (upgraded to v.14 about 7 months ago), seemed logical to centralize my money so that another company will not cease operations suddenly.
CONS
- I still have not made my mind on a DAW replacement. I'm pretty sure i'll go with the 99$ Ableton Live version (i really like the looping features and have been interested to go deeper in that kind of workflow for years) AND another DAW as my main combo. Reaper (Seems very flexible and customisable)? Fruity Loops (mainly for its GUI / Touch integration)?
- Any DAW is still not Pro Tools (and its presence in "big" professional studios...) but I do not want to be trapped in Avid's subscription model. The fact that I was not 100% familiar with PT's workflow and shortcuts cost me a job opportunity in a professional studio. So, whatever I'm gonna select as a DAW, I'll have to customize its keyboard shortcuts to make it as "Pro-Tools-Like" as can be, to prevent that from happening again... (that and some work on my attitude I guess... LOL)
Anyways, happy holidays Sonarites!
