So I'm probably dealing with some level of ignorance on this topic, but here goes. Is there a way to identify the project start and finish points, a project length for lack of better words? I ask because when exporting to audio, I use the "Entire Mix" option and I need to make sure that I manually select the range and the tracks that I want exported. This doesn't seem like the most efficient way to export out my mix.
I found that if it only exports the select tracks during the selected range.

Nope. You're doing it the best way.

One alternative is to insert a "start" and "finish" marker then select between those 2 points when exporting

That's the way it is intended to work.
Imagine the chaos that would ensue if you didn't want any unselected tracks exported but Sonar did it anyway!

If there are any tracks I don't want to hear (exported), I mute them.

*Edit:  That probably came across as sarcasm.  I didn't mean it to be sarcastic.

Which is fine until you've got any automated mutes set up. You can't just click the mute button to exclude it from exports if the export range encompasses an On or Unmuted section of the envelope - so I see a definite need for export to obey track selection rules.

BTW, your post didn't come across as sarcasm to me - but I could be a bit thick skinned after frequenting several volatile football forums

Another reason to use Archive instead of Mute to exclude unwanted tracks. Not only will it exclude the track, it frees up any resources used by the track. Of course, it can get a little tricky if the unwanted tracks are part of a multi-output synth.

I completely forgot about Archive...
