  • Is Vintage Channel 64-bit?

I don't often use Vintage Channel these days, but I happened to want to try it on something and I was surprised to see that it loaded in Bitbridge (in 64-bit Sonar, that is). When I look at the plug-in via Plugin Manager, its Friendly Name is VC-64 and the dll is Vintage_Channel_VC64.dll. It is installed in \program files\ (as opposed to \program files (x86)\). All of this makes me wonder whether somehow I have corrupted its install. Can anybody advise, please?

The browser doesn't think so

Thanks, Bob. So you're experiencing the same thing as me. I still wonder whether it is the case that a plug called anything-64 would actually be 32-bit.

There are two generally accepted ways audio software can be can be considered '64 bit'.

1.  The code itself
2.  The degree of precision in the processing; the data

It is quite possible/common for 32-bit code to employ/implement 64-bit processing

Ironically, I renewed my acquaintanceship with VC-64 in the course of going through my plug-ins to eliminate as many as possible of the 32-bit ones, because I have a suspicion that Bitbridge is a source of instability. I say suspicion because on the relatively rare occasions when something crashes these days, Bitbridge is typically in the vicinity.

The plugins were called "-64" (for the audio processing) before people had 64-bit PC/OS's so it wasn't an issue at the time.
It sure is misleading today and a good reason to drop them when it's not possible to rename them.

It's a shame but the guy who developed the plug-in retired a few years back so that's why it was never coded for 64 bit and there haven't been any further updates. I really used it a lot in my 32 bit days on buses. It's a very warm sounding plug-in.

I agree, it's a great plug-in but I know someday something will happen where I won't be able to use it any more...probably the closest option is the set of Blue Tubes plug-ins, but one of the aspects that made the VC-64 outstanding was the ability to have different effects routings within in.

Cakewalk has tried to find the guy who designed it so they could secure the rights to update it, without success. Pity.

"The guy" would be Danish plugin developer Torben Kjaerhus Larsen, who vanished without a trace in a manner suitable for a TV mystery.

In a KVR post in February 2009, he stated that he was "alive and well", and never came back.  The last anyone heard from him was November 2010, when he posted on Gearslutz (GS shows his last login was December 2011). It's been suggested that he'd died or been murdered, gone mental or been imprisoned. Pure speculation, all of it. I'm going with alien abduction.

Old programmers don't die... They just hide themselves within the code...... ;-)

Yes, his other plugins were quite good too!

I hope he's ok wherever he is...
