I am working on a large project.  6 songs... probably not big by most standards but big for me. 
 
I was trying to just use the tracks as is and edit them with a one shoe fits all songs approach.  On softer songs, I don't want the guitars blaring as much etc, drums, I wanted dynamic range to be more flexible.  I tried something different.  I used track folders for each song. I put copies of the tracks into different folders with the before and after material removed so that each song's tracks could be edited to the specific song.
 
I would "hide" folders that I was not working on. My idea was to go into TRACK MANAGER and check the box to keep states between track and console view the same.
 
Sometimes when I'm bouncing between Screenset 1 and Screenset 5... in my case 1 is tracks and 5 is console.... tracks disappear and reappear.  I have the box checked to keep the states synced.  Any thoughts. I'm on October version of Sonar Platinum.
 
Another question.... To save resources in another daw, I can make tracks "inactive" while I am not working with them.  In Sonar the best option I can see is track freeze.  Track freeze has reduced some of the cpu load in this project.  Are there other resource saving measures that I can take.  For instance, when I hear something I don't like and want to retrack, I click the FX button and PDC button at the top while recording.  When done I click those buttons back off.
 
Thoughts?  I'm all ears.

To make a track inactive use the Archive button. This will take the plug-ins used by the track out of memory and not read audio data from disk.
 
Disconnecting the synth will remove it from memory. When the synth rack is docked in the browser, the option is in the menu on the synth tab.

If it was a snake, that function would have bitten me.  Thank you. Mr Cook.  That was just the offender I need :D  Oh and I just looked... that can be applied per folder.... that is awesome.... I just unloaded my cpu down to NOTHING...

In regards the PDC button......should I be clicking this when tracking??? The only plugin I usually have on for tracking are amp-sims (Amplitube or MarkBass).

It's on when it's not lit. Somewhat counter-intuitive but there ya go.
 
Incidentally, when tracking, I just hit e to bypass all Fx. This might not be an option for you depending on your recording workflow.

At Jeffiphone,  don't sweat or worry about hijacking my threads... I'll help where I can and the question is valid.  Turning off FX and PDC just takes pressure off the cpu.  The old single core and dual core systems used to get bent out of shape on certain fx and vsti.  PC's have come a long way.  Large track counts with lots of fx and vsti's tax the CPU.  The worst offenders are fx's with "lookahead" capabilities.  T0o many instances of iZotope Nectar will flat out  kill a cpu.  Transient shapers on drums and basses are notorious for the cpu behavior.
 
My current project has 6 songs.  In the 6 track folders, I have approximately 20 tracks.  120 track count total...and growing... WHEW!  I still haven't maxed out my CPU and MEMORY capabilities.  But I don't want to either.  I just know that I don't need the tracks tying up processing power when I'm focused on another section of the project. 
 
One reason I split the tracks to folders had to do with vocals,  I didn't want the same back up processing on each one.  I didn't want that same send amounts in certain songs.  Splitting it up like this allows me to mix song by song but keep this band in one project file.
 
 
I was getting lost in all of this.  That's why I want my states to sync up between track and console.  I don't need to look at the 1st song while I"m working on the 5th song.  I could have 6 different files and open and close them one at a time.  But if an idea goes off, I just go to the folder and knock it out.  I have some relative consistency across all of the songs.  Maybe I'm doing it wrong, who knows.  But the work flow seems to be working fine as I have slowly built the project.
