Hey all!  Is there a way to change the key of the entire audio inserted track in Sonar Studio?  I inserted a karaoke song that I want to change the key of.  Can it be done, and how?  If not, is there a program out there tha I can use to do this?  Thanks a lot!

Let's see..(looking into Studio's effect page) ..I saw a 'pitch shifter' ..not sure what it does.

If that won't do, you can try http://audacity.sourceforge.net/  (you need to process the audio first - Effect - Change pitch, then save the mp3 / or as wave, then import into Sonar). The previous version of audacity requires a separate 'lame' mp3 library download before you can export to mp3. Not sure if this new version includes that, but the info is in the website.

Short answer is no. Not with the result you are lookin for.

I'm not sure how good the result will be but try this............

  1. Select clip.
  2. Press Ctrl+L (Convert to groove loop)
  3. Press shift+I (Brings uo the inspector clip properties)
  4. Click on the Groove Clip panel
  5. Check "Follow pitch"
  6. Then use the "Reference Note", "Pitch" and "Fine Pitch" boxes to adjust.

The result may not be pretty though......

I think the best way is probably select the clip then use the Process->Transpose... dialog. (Edit - I changed my mind. Is this really better than the groove clip method?!!!)

In that dialog you give the number of half-steps. Then check the Transpose Audio box. Then choose the type of calculation. My first guess is Radius Mix-Advanced will be the best. Two sliders then become enabled. I'd try raising the pitch slider. Or you can try MPEX - mix, polyphonic and fool with formant scaling. Either way, prepare to be disappointed if you are transposing vocals very far.

It takes a long time (uses a single CPU), so if you are just experimenting to find the best settings, do it on a short section.

Would not Pitch stretch 2 be good and flexible for this task ? it is said to be more advanced and of higher quality than the usual Pitch Shifter effect;
To get the best quality, make sure the MPEX option under the Advanced tab is activated. It is also recommended to transpose within four semitones up or down  (source : Sonar X1 power book, Scott Garrigus); but try to listen how the audio data react with higher value...

Personally, I use the Nero wave editor transposer tool and it seems to be rather efficient, even with high values. I never used the Sonar X1 Pitch Stretch 2, but it would be a pity that such a program like Sonar doesn't include a good pitch transposer algorithm as we can find in little program like Nero, Sony or others...

I've always wondered what a pitch transposer does to cymbals and drums. Sure think background vocals may struggle to stay in key as well!
