yesterday I started 3 new sessions from the file menu very quickly to document some ideas - and then saved them after a little work was done.  these 3 sessions saved all the audio data in the Cakewalk Projects folder....even though my global setting for audio data is the default Cakewalk/Audio pathway? So ... Today I go to open the new projects...  and see HUNDREDS of my takes strewn through the projects folder from yesterdays sessions.  I cut and pasted all the audio files into the folders where I normally would have sonar keep them (I usually go through the process of pointing each session to its own audio folder when I create the session)... however ... now sonar keeps copying the file back to the projects folder...   how do I change this behaviour?

I remember some time ago that there was a global setting to keep project audio in its own audio folder... however I cannot seem to find it.

How do I fix and prevent.... go=-)

Go to FILE  / FOLDER LOCATIONS  in preferences there's a list of all file paths. Surprised you would not have easily found it.

Thats the thing - what it says here isnt where it saved the audio data... also... the sessions keep copying everything back to the wrong folder... and I dont really know how to change that... so really the question is... inside of an actual session - where can you change the folder location for the audio data?

Just a tip, but:  Keep your mix-down wav files in a different location than where your projects and their audio reside.  The reason being that when you do an audio-clean-up with "Cakewalk audio finder", all those mixes may be identified as orphans and then you delete them all.  Learned that sucker the hard way.

I keep all my projects/audio in /Cakewalk/MySongs and all my mix-downs in /Cakewalk/wave files.

I never use the "audio finder".

"Save As" to a new directory works perfect for clean up and keep only files in the project (and should reduce file fragmentation)

to the OP: rather than moving files manually, you should use "Save As" to move

remember your first save is the most important one.
when you make your first save, begin a project, make sure that folder is set where you want it.
Also be sure to check off the Save with Project option.

I have been saving the same way for a long time now, so my habits aren't the best but they are productive.
In my project folder, I create a file with my project name and inside that folder I create another file called: Audio.
I do all this before I even start a project. This way when I start my project, I simply navigate to this folder.

Your options now are simple really. open the project and do a "Save as". with the audio folder checked.
then you can run the "Cakewalk Clean audio folder".
I do this after I bounce all my track "Bounce to clips". this makes my folders more manageable.

FYI: The "Global Audio Folder" location and "Use Per-Project Audio Folders" check box are  under "Preferences > File > Audio Data".

The project and audio paths can also be set in the "File > Save As" window.
