All: I just got a fancy new vid card, with new monitors to follow, but while the card goes up to 8k - fairy tale land right now - I'm wondering what would be the best (highest res and fitting the most "stuff" on the least screen real estate) monitor because I'm downsizing from four 1080s running on an ancient quad card to this new beast of a card running two monitors.

But before I shell out for some ridiculous monitors, I want to make sure whatever card/monitor combo I have is supported, if that's the right word, by Sonar. In other words, I don't want to overkill - waste money - by, for example, buying a couple of 4K monitors when SPLAT would look identical on a lesser monitor. The card is an Nvidia GeForce Experience 1070, 8gb RAM "Founders Edition" (I think that means it came with a sticker).

Forgive my cluelessness on this and, if it matters, I'm not a gamer, this is for SPLAT only.

Some might disagree, but most will not.. but I think this is over kill.
unless you are playing World of Warcraft or something you don't need a 400.00 dollar video card.
a simple dual HD card will do the trick fine.
 
I tore my video card out and opted for onboard video using dual HD 40 inch monitors.
in actuality, they are TV's not monitors. they have a high refresh rate and they work amazing.
The video cards have caused more headaches than they did help.
However my Daw is custom built by me, and it does one thing... its a DAW.
if you are gaming on the same PC, then I can understand where you are coming from.
 
What kind of PC do you have, Specs ?

Of course I just mis-placed the spec sheet from the manufacturer, but it was custom-made. The motherboard is an an ASUS X97 or something with 32 GB of RAM, and a manufacturer overclock CPU to just over 4 GHz. Video card was definitely overkill, probably because after about 150 hours of troubleshooting BSODs, I was finally smart enough to figure out the was my old video card.

Really, my more basic question, coming from my position of extreme ignorance as to all things video card/monitor-related is what is the best monitor that would give me the best results with the gear I have. I'm sorry I can't give more details at the moment, but of course I happen to be in the middle of a studio rearrangement as we speak, so everything is in pieces and I also can't fire my machine up and get the info from there.

For example, if I bought a 4K TV ( or similar quality monitor, if there is such a thing) which this video card supports, would I see Sonar in 4K resolution ( or a close approximation thereof, or would it be just a total waste of time). I mean, I'm assuming, and maybe I'm just completely off on this, that the software you use, as well as the video card and the capabilities of the monitor, affect the quality of the video resolution, etc.

So the more generic question remains, I guess (?)

you are correct, But a DAW is nothing like a Video game, or watching Hi Def movies.
There are not enough moving pieces in any DAW (besides drawn Wave forms) that require a top notch Video card.
The most important reasons to use one would be:
A- to relieve some of the burden put on your system by using onboard graphics.
However with DAW's, theres not a whole lot there to worry about.
B- Needing more DVI/VGA inputs. For example if your onboard only allowed for 1, or 2 monitors.
Almost every modern Mobo today is equipped with Dual monitor set ups.
C- your using the PC for something other than a DAW. Like gaming.
 
Im just trying to save you some money man. My opinions are true and nothing else except to be as honest as possible. as long as your onboard has 2 slots for DVI and can run Open GL. It will do what you want it to do.
there is only so much to see using a DAW. not like gaming.
Hope someone else comments here as well so you can get a varying opinion ;-)

I would not go 4K unless the monitor (or two) is large enough to produce around 100-120 ppi at 4K. Sonar does not like other than 100% text size (in Windows) so adjusting text size and so forth via Windows is out. 4K on less than a 32" monitor is just too small. You would have to adjust the monitor resolution to be less than native 4K so what is the point then ? For 4K I would get at least a 32" or more likely a 40" (or two), anything smaller is a waste of money.
