I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question, but how do people document microphone placement? After fussing for ages to get it right I want to make sure I can come back to it at a later date. I'm taking photos and making notes, but I'm afraid it's all going to be pretty cryptic a few weeks down the line.

photos of mic placements, saving settings of digital I/O, notes on analog pre amp settings ...
 
but that only serves as starting point for next time around as things like drum heads, tuning, etc will be different and require use of ears ;-)

You use the documentation (or memory) to roughly place, then your ears.
 
Also don't forget the sweet spot in your room.  Right placement in the wrong spot can be off, too.
