So if I use the console faders to record some volume automation moves on certain parts of tracks, is there a way I can hide what gets produced on the clip in the track view...? It's very distracting with those long lines that run the whole length of the clips unless and until I need to bring them back into view for some reason...

Automation Lanes can be toggled on/off in Track View by using the button shown below:

If you do choose to hide them, the individual envelopes will still be displayed "ghosted" in the parent track:

You can still edit these envelopes in the Track View by shift-clicking any of the ghosted envelopes:

As far as I know, there is no way to completely hide them

Although I've never wished I could completely hide automation envelopes, I recently learned that you can actually do it by disabling View -> Display -> Display Ghosted Data in the Track view.

just change the track filter to: Clips. you can barely see them (when they are ghosted).

In the TV menu tabs.
(Look at Sir Jonesey's photos= its the greyish/black bar with white lettering)

Keep in mind that when/if you simply open automation lanes, that a volume envelope is automatically created.
This will defeat any static changes you try to make to volume with any of the faders or sliders.
It's a bug in my mind.

I wouldn't call it a bug - why else would you open an automation lane if you didn't want to automate?
Clicking on the + sign on an automation lane opens up the next envelope - Pan, click it again you get the third - Mute, and so on.
This is entirely logical and repeatable so IMO this is no bug, it's as designed

I see it as time-saver. Most of the time when I want to open an automation lane, it's to do Volume so I'm glad that's the default.

Bottom line is if you don't want to start working with automation, don't tell SONAR that you want to start working with automation.  There's no need to open up automation lanes to see if any automation is present; the status of the show/hide button tells you.
