Hey!

TTS-1 sounds awful under 96khz 24bit with my Roland Quad Capture card. Anyone know why? Sounds distorted and all.

I had that, too. I think Roland TTS doesn't run at 96 kHz. I found information confirming that "TTS-1 DXi Does Not Support 88.2 kHz Sample Rate", but as it also wouldn't work at 96 kHz for me, I just supposed it only works at 44.1 and 48 kHz. Some info on the web and in this forum seemed to run into a dead end about getting TTS to sound good at 96 kHz, so I can't state for sure that you can't get it to work - I just gave up. Most people recommend working at 44.1 or 48 kHz in 24 bit anyway, so I gave up with 96 kHz.

TTS is a good sounding synth but there is no need to use 96khz.... drop back to 44.1khz and try it.

Read this post and it will resolve the TTS-1 issue as a workaround.
Link:http://forum.cakewalk.com/TTS1-quotLight-Load-Modequot-m3282331.aspx
Open TTS-1. On the panel select System/System Settings - Option/Options/Check 'Light Load Mode'.
This allows 96Khz to work perfectly by reducing the TTS-1 load on the CPU.
DXI are known for this. Press the GM2 button frequently when the TTS-1 doesn't sound correctly.
This reinitializes the GM2 sysx command. Have fun. Best wishes.

Please double check the thread date before posting. This thread is almost 8 years old.

Hi scook,

Are you aware that now in 2018 Cakewalk users are still having the TTS-1 96Khz distortion issue.
Sonar Platinum by BL contains TTS-1. The tech people at Cakewalk previously disregarded the matter.
The age of a thread is irrelevant to you and I when the issue has not been resolved.
Here's why: The 'Light Load Mode' is a workaround, not a fix. The fix requires a dll editor to write the
setting into the TTS-1 dll. A dll editor cost more money and altering the TTS-1 dll could void your Cakewalk license.
Therefore the matter is current and the thread is current in 2018. Perhaps BL can provide a fix for the TTS-1.

When will this get replaced with more modern sounds?

Maybe it is time to put to sleep TTS-1 synth and replace it with a modern GM2 compatible synth that will support user SF2 banks or similar? It is 14 years old.

What do you mean by "modern"?  The GM format dictates what instruments they are, so do you mean cleaner-sounding?  More realistic?  If you're looking for "top of the charts" or synth-type sounds, you won't find them in a GM module.

The challenge here is that TTS-1 is a free GM instrument and for its intended purpose, it works just fine for most users (other than the 96khz issue).  If you're looking for something better, there's always Halion Sonic, Sampletank. AIR Structure, Korg Legacy Collection, etc.

Of course, if you leave rompler territory and look at specialty libraries, there are much more realistic and expensive options.

I'm not knocking your suggestion.  I just don't see how realistic it is to expect Bandcamp to license or record a new sample set for a free GM module.

JonD can you please explain  "you won't find them in a GM module." part... I am a bit confused here. My understanding is, regardless of GM rules your synth will sound as good as your samples are (for the most part).  I do not believe the software on your list is fully GM compatible. If I remember correctly, none of them have GM bank chage option.
